Avocado

I know it's supposed to be good for us, but it really puts me off seeing the vast amount of fat it adds to my food log. Should I be eating it, or not?

YES! Those are very good, healthy fats!0
-
But it always puts my fat level over quota!0
-
It's a good fat though - I ignore being over quota on days where I eat avocado. It's great for your skin, hair, etc. There's different types of fats - this is a good one!0
-
I know! I love it too and eat it all the time! Regardless of the quota!0
-
I eat them as well, along with olive oil coconut oil almonds.. all things that are high in fat but good fats. Enjoy in moderation of course0
-
read this about monounsaturated fats, it is good for you!

They are good fats, but here's something you can try to prevent yourself from overdoing it:
Take a small portion of avocado (like, 3-4 slices) and stick it in a blender/ FP with a dash of garlic, pepper, and salt. Add 1 cup of plain, nonfat greek yogurt and blend. You can spread it on sandwiches, dollop it on top of salad, use as veggie dip etc..... gives you the taste of avocado but spreads it a lot further.0 -
I have a similar recipe with avocado and cottage cheese. I really love it in salads, though!0
-
I had a whole avocado for breakfast. 12g of (good) fat, out of a daily allowance of 40g. I don't see any difficulty in managing that.0
-
avocado! It has good fats so that doesn't count. They are also cholesterol free!0

see there are many differant schools of thought on this. i believe it depends on the size and variety that the avacado is. all are horses of differant colors and should be eaten according to which they are.0 -
If avocado is putting you over your fat limit try cutting out fat from other areas of your diet. Cut back on cheeses, butter, processed foods, etc. and make sure your fat is coming from healthy sources only.0

Am I the only one who really dislikes avocado?0
-
I love advocado -- and like the others -- If I went over because of eating it -- I was more likely to check and see where the other fats were coming from than cut out my advocado. What's awesome is that alot of places have them on sale right now
And about the hair and skin -- I believe it -- my first few weeks -- I was eating approx 1 perday -- my acne almost all cleared up lol. I don't know if it was my cado or just less grease and sweets -- but I've been sooo happy about it!!0 -

totally agree besides they are so yummy. i just think of them as a treat. cause they are so expensive here only get them every now and then.0 -

Say yes to 'cados!!
"The avocado's image first took on some polish with a 1996 study by researchers at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in Mexico (Archives of Medical Research, Winter 1996) that looked at the health benefits of daily avocado consumption. The 45 volunteers who ate avocados every day for a week experienced an average 17% drop in total blood cholesterol. Their cholesterol ratio also changed in a healthy way: Their levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein, or "bad fat") and triglycerides, both associated with heart disease, went down. Their HDL (high-density lipoprotein, or "good fat") levels, which tend to lower the risk of heart disease, climbed." ---a portion of the above article.0 -

There's actually about 30g in a small-medium sized avocado.....

Do it! So good for you-and DELISH!0
-
Yes, eat it!!!! Look at what other foods are putting you over on your fat quota. Perhaps those are ones to eliminate rather than the avocado. Also, make sure your portion size is appropriate.0
-
Ah yes our wonderful reliable database, lol!
Still, it's good fats, so I wouldn't give it up.0
