B12 Shot...Anyone getting these?

Hey I'm new so if there was a post on this recently, I apologize. I went to an appointment recently at a "Center for Medical Weight Loss" that is basically out of a spa. The visit wasn't really worth my time or money, but I had some success subbing meals for their shakes and bars in the past since I'm always on the run. I liked the shakes and bars because they are lower calorie and higher in protein then what you find in the stores.
So they RN offered when I come (If I go back) a B12 shot. It isn't cheap, so I'm wondering if it really makes a difference if you are eating right and exercising. Anyone have experience taking a B12 shot? I would love to hear your thoughts on it!

well i'm a nurse n we only give them if you have a condition called pernicious anemia where you have a true deficiency of vit b12. and you need to do a blood test for that... otherwise most vitamins that you get in excess are excreted out of the body anyways...those r my thoughts n what i follow0

when I was on the doctor bernstine diet or what ever it was called I got a b6 shot once or twice a week0

I actually did a "medical" weight loss program (also in conjunction with a spa) where you're on a very low cal, liquid diet, aside from one bar a day. I got a B12 shot every week simply because it was part of my appointment. I honestly didn't notice a difference. I have noticed as I change my habits to healthier ones, I have more energy without someone treating my lovehandles like a dartboard!
Best of luck to you!0 -
The reason for the B12 shot is to boost energy. I used to get them about 13 yrs ago but I can't vouch that they are worth getting if they are expensive. I do occasionally take a B12 supplement.0

I like em. They make a difference in my energy levels but i only get them before a race as it is pricey. If you work out a lot, your body is usually deficient in b12, vitamin d, magnesium, phosphorus and other core minerals/vitamins. Vitamin therapy helps with restoring imbalances. Theres a lot of controversy between homeopathic vitamin therapy and traditional medicine. Traditional doctors call homeopathic doctors quacks and homeopathic doctors call traditionals drones. I think vitamin therapy is an awesome thing - especially since our foods are so deficient (even fresh grown fruits/grains/veggies due to crappy soil/genetic engineering/pesticides). Just my opinion.0

I get the B12 shot every month but that is because i have Crohns Diease.
I find they realy keep my energy level up and i can tell when i am getting close to getting my next shot because i start getting more tired then normal.
I dont have to pay for the shots maybe thats because my dr ordered them or because I am in Canada?0 -

The shots are covered by insurance here when medically necessary0 -
I had a B12 shot once. I'm a vegetarian so my doctor likes to check my levels fairly regularly to make sure I'm still on track. My B12 levels were in the normal range, but on the low end of the scale so he wanted to give me one.
I didn't notice a difference, but I take B12 supplements occasionally to make sure I stay on track.0 -

This is correct- I'm a Nurse Practitioner. It would make for expensive pee. As long as you eat healthy, there should be no reason for someone to get B12. If you have anemia, then it may be necessary, but even then, there are lab values to follow.0 -
I get B 12 shots, but I also have pernicious anemia. If I don't get them I have no energy and I get sick and I get bad sores in the corners of my mouth. My problem is I don't absorb vitamins so they have to be injected instead. If you don't need them I don't recommend them. I have to get them once a month for the rest of my life.0

Thanks everyone. This was very helpful! I think I will save my money for now just see how it goes.0

Isn't that one of the ingredients in 5-hour Energy drinks? Why pay for a shot and a placebo?0

I'm not sure what your weight-loss goals are, but I thought I'd mention that for long-term weight-loss the meal replacements may not be the best route because it demands a lifestyle change that may not be realistic in the long run.
Also this website will list some B12 rich foods. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitaminb12/0
