Too much sugar, from fruit..

I've been eating about 3-4 bananas a day, as well as apples, and oranges, which makes up around 90% of my daily sugar intake (which today was at 209g)

Should I really be concerned about the sugar that comes from fruit? I normally eat alot of fruit, especially bananas to help with my blood pressure.

Nope sugar from fruit is fine because due to the fiber in fruit most of the sugar never gets absorbed by the body. With your bananas if you eat them a little to the green side the have much less sugar in them too. The sugar actually increases as a banana ripens.

Try to cut down on the bananas and use cinnamon to help with blood sugar. Though your body processes fructose from fruit differently than processed sugar, you can still over do it. look for herbal remedies if you are concerned about your blood pressure though =] hope this helps!

    Excellent, thank you :)
  • I actually wound up taking sugar off of my daily food diary because I got so sick of it being over. I watch my refined sugars because diabetes runs in my family, but I love fruit and eat at least 5 servings day so my sugar is always over. It drives me nuts. A lot of people think all sugar, even natural sugars, are bad for you, but I just can't get on board with anyone telling me that I can't eat fruit.

i increased my sugar, fiber, & protein goals on here because for whatever reason MFP has really low values for those & i think it is a great thing if you're going over on those 3 values daily, especially if it is because of healthy foods :o)

I think sugar in fruit is better than regular sugar, but to a diabetic, sugar is sugar, so I'm careful about it anyway. My Dad is diabetic and his doctor tells him that he can only have half a banana because there is too much sugar in it for him. I eat a hole banana, since I am not diabetic, but careful not to be since it runs in my family, and I know we should get 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day, which I am not very good at. So my answer would be not to discount sugar in fruit. Keep eating fruit, but do watch the sugar intake and try to keep it at a reasonable level. Everything in moderation.
  • I have researched this issue and found that yes even to much sugar from fruit is bad for you. They say you should go more with citrus type foods like grapefruit (which I find is personally gross.) So I cut back my fruit intake. I am more a pineapple, watermelon and grapes type of girl which are loaded with sugar tool
