Been a while since I have been in, part due to holidays, then new job, then computer down using droid and well here I am. I started using Atkins in August 2010 and overall lost 19 lbs in 2 months, since the holidays i have not stayed on track for 20 g - 60g of carbs so I gained 5lb back....no worries, I know why (too many carbs) :o) I just wanted to share an article that I read last week. I find it interesting because it is not the first time I have heard some of this info.

I am not pushing low-carb, but I think for me it has been a much better plan then counting cals. and "Low fat/Low Cal" eating. It is what my doctor prescribed and despite what alot of people say, it has been the best eating plan by far for weightloss, concentration, fitness and overall feeling GREAT I have found.

Just thought I would share for those interested

I know someone who was ordered by her doctor to STOP her low-carb diet because it had screwed her blood numbers so bad. They say it won't raise your cholesterol and such, and that's just not true. It does.

Worse...have you ever been stuck in an elevator with someone on a low-carb diet?! Its like Death Breath has invaded the entire elevator.

Yes, it'll help you drop some pounds faster initially, but what's the point of being skinnier if you stink and put yourself at risk of heart disease?

Just b/c you know someone who had an issue with a low-carb diet, doesn't mean that's true for everyone. The same goes for the bad breath. Also, where did you get your info on it increasing your risk for heart disease. Just curious?

LOL hahahaha, I am sorry this was funny!!!!!!!!! Yes you are right, sat first the breath thing "stinks" no pun, but if you are watched by your doctor and you eat Low Carb correctly you shouldn't have issues. Any diet can cause high cholesterol, you still have to watch what you are eating, but gone are the days of calorie counting and refined garbage....

That really was funny...I hope I don't have death breath....

I think everyone should watch the movie Fathead. It is on hulu and netflix. It really supports the low carb hypothesis and then read the book good calories bad calories. I am dying to know what you all think of fathead. Let me know... take care.

PS I try to not eat more than 100 carbs per day.

LOL! That's too funny. I just started a low carb diet by choice. Counting calories hasn't worked for me either. I always feel hungry and not so much now that I eat more protein. I haven't noticed any breath issues but I just started Sat so we'll see. Besides, there's always sugar free gum and Altoids.

Saw it and (insert cliche) it changed my life! I've struggled for years with the stupidity that is the strict low-fat diet. Honestly, I started very recently but I feel completely different! I haven't gotten a chance to read 'Good Calories Bad Calories". But it is on my "to do" list!

Certain diets work for certain people and not for others. Lo carb worked for the OP, it would never work for me (my body can't handle much meat)... but I also know folks who have had success with it. I'm generally opposed to low carb dieting because so much of the information out there is wonky and can lead to unhealthiness, but the concept behind it does work for some people. Low carb can be done healthily -- eating a steak for breakfast, lunch and dinner is not the safe way to do it. Most people who have found continued success with the low carb diet know this... but like I said, to each their own. As long as you're eating healthy and getting all of your nutrients, you should be losing without side effects.

I saw the movie FATHEAD and thought it was quite interesting. I also follow the lower carb way of living and it was approved by my doctor. I eat under 100g per day as well. I also alternate by having lower carbs on some days and higher ones on others, but I eat very healthy meals as well. I experimenting right now to see if this calorie shifting along with lower carbs will produce different results. I've only ever heard that SOME people may experience bad breath while they are in ketosis under the most restricted levels of carbs (under 20g). As long as they brush their teeth and keep gum or tic tacs on hand, then they shouldn't have any problems. I think that was probably a random case of bad breath and BO from that particular person. Wow! SMH

Ok, gotta watch this Fathead thing.......I am all about the Low Carb, but just so frustrated that there are not more choices out there when eating out....or anything...........reminds me of all the fat floaty people in Wall-E.....nothing is natural, and though I know not all the carbs out there are bad....(whole grain bread and the like), it just seems like there is nothing but CRAP on the shelves.......

There used to be a Low Carber Group in here......now where are they????

I'm not a proponent of highly restrictive diets, not so much for lack of results, but for lack of sustainability. I believe any "diet" can work if you're in the right state of mind, which is why its hard to tell if a diet is truly working. I've lost weight several times, most recently on a "metabollic diet", but it was near impossible to maintain past the first month, and the weight would creep back, and then some. What I've come to realize is that you can eat anything, provided its in moderation, provided you complement your diet with regular exercise. The calorie count method has been working really well for me, and I thank the tools on this site for getting me halfway to where I need to be.

I did the Atkins diet when it was all the rage a few years back. I lost 35 pounds in 4 months (my goal) and felt awesome. Then I started dreaming about bread, pasta and potatoes (and I hated potatoes before Atkins!) and leapt off the wagon after a year. I gained the weight back and then went on Weight Watchers. Then I could eat carbs (especially the 100-calorie snack packs of crap), but I was always hungry and *****y. Carbs don't fill you up for very long. I followed the plan for a year, lost a whole 8 pounds, and felt terrible.

I have a very long family history of high cholesterol and heart disease, so have had my cholesterol tested every year since my mid-twenties. Before Atkins, it was OK. When I was on Atkins, my numbers were so good the lab tested them twice to ensure they didn't make a mistake. Six months into Weight Watchers, my numbers were high. A year later, I was on meds.

I have friends who excelled on a low fat lifestyle. I excelled on a low carb. The "death breath" (LOL!) went away after the really low carb induction period. I think everyone is different and what works for one won't necessarily work for another. Now if I can only get the willpower to actually stay away from the bread.... :)

I lost weight doing the Atkins diet a few years ago and then gained it all back quickly when I got tired of eating that way. I am trying to eat less carbs and more protein, but this time around I am only making changes that I can stick to forever. For me it's just not realistic to eat like that forever.

I eat a lot of fresh veggies and salad. (While low carbing) and a lot of chicken last I checked those did not have offensive breath odors. I work in a hotel and I am often in the elevator with guest and although they can ocassionally smell, I really can't say its because they are low carb. How does one know the person they are standing next to with bad breath is on a low carb diet??? Were they wearing a name badge to identify the diet??? Thats like saying "have you ever been next to some one on a low cal diet, thier farts stink! We all get bad breath once in a while, we all have days the deodorant fails us, and we all have days when our farts stink. I know people that rarely eat protein but they eat so much sugar, HFCS and such that the death from their breath is the decay of the teeth.... actual death.

That is so true. Real low carbing is not the "bacon and cheese diet". It's about healthy fats, protein and lots of vegetables, especially greens.

You've done an Outstanding job! I most certainly agree with the fact that different diets work for different people. I personally know that the low fat high carb diet doesn't work for me, nor do I purchase a lot of processed foods. I tend to cook all of my meals at home and rarely eat out because of all the sodium that they put in food. I've begun watching my sodium intake as well, which a lot of people tend to ignore until they're plagued with the illness of having high blood pressure among other health issues. I choose to be proactive vs reactive when it comes to my health. I say to each his own in finding whatever lifestyle choice suits you. No need to bash anyone else's choices just because you don't agree with them. I also tend to eat all of my food on saucers (next size down from regular plate) because that is the actual size where normal portion sizes fit. I also only eat the actual recommended serving sizes and have found them to be more than enough. It's all about YOUR CHOICE and what works for YOU in order for you to succeed. I wish the best of luck to all of you on MFP as you reach the end of your weight loss journey and lifestyle changes. Stay blessed! ~smile

Thanks for the articles, they were really informative. I have read these type of studies (did read the webMD prior to starting) myself before starting on Atkins. I think that alot of people have a misconception and group all Low Carb Eaters into the same category. These articles are great information for people who might consider knocking out the "good" carbs we need. I in no way think that not eating fruits veggies and whole grains is the way to go, and do enjoy them on occasion.

Thanks again for posting that helpful info :drinker:

So, here's the thing. I'm sure I can pull up as many articles/movies/studies supporting low-carb as you can that debunk it. That is why this can be so frustrating. I think, at the end of the day, you just have to find what works for you....and not assume that it will do the same for everyone else.

But I'm sure they're all crazy.....

I think the "eggs, bacon and cheese" is not a good way to eat. I wish that low carbers can get a little more love and less judgement. Lets admit this is the time of the internet. We can all go on line and find an article to support our choices. "grapefruit diet, low cal, low carb, lemon juice, vegan, hopping on one foot all day burns twice as many calories as walking (okay the last one I made up....or did I?) It truely comes down to balance. I watch my carbs to keep them under 100 per day, but somedays I go over.... I work out, I eat something fresh everyday at least once..... BALANCE and we are all different do whats right for us individually.

Great job on working on those low blood #'s....I have been blessed, before starting this Low Carb journey my doctor did my blood work, and said....."Well your blood work came back" (I steadied myself was it thyroid....diabetes...cholesterol) "You are a perfectly healthy 37 year old woman......) (Sigh of relief....wait, then why....) "Your just fat"......he reached in his pocket and pulled out his prescription pad.....could he really have the ticket to a magic pill and was I getting it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He set it down between us and began to write.....Rice, Bread, Pasta, Cakes or sugary deserts, potatoes......and then he put a big x thru them....handed me the paper and said, you are not to eat ANY of these types of foods anymore. And away I went to the library to learn about Low Carb eating......1 week later and 10lbs gone he saw me again and said he wanted to see me in 1 year to check my bloodwork......

    Here I am
