i have a 13 month old and ive been working out at home since she was about a month old, it used to be easy cause she would just sleep alot as a newborn, then she'd hang in her walker an dthings like that while i worked out for 30 min...now, its impossible. working out to a dvd isent bad because im in the living room with her and i can keep an eye on her, although when i do crunches she likes to lay across my stomach or thinks im playing, but i also have a treadmill in the laundry room which i never get to use. i just dont like the idea of doing just a dvd once a day. I used to do jillian michaels banish fat, and i would do it everyday but didnt notice any change, ive tried the 30 day shred but didnt get pass L1 cause i got an inner arm tattoo which im not finishing this sat so alot of arm stuff is out for the next 2 weeks.
so what do u guys do? and if u do th edvd thing, which ones do u use that u are noticing a change?

A neighbor of mine with 4 young kids walks about 3 miles per day. She has the newborn strapped to her chest. A toddler in a jogging stroller and the 2 older kids ride ahead on their bikes. She looks fantastic and does this about everyday. I wish I had her motivation. Occasionally I'll see her walk alone using hand weights. (Her husband must be home when this happens.):flowerforyou:0

Maybe get up earlier than she does in the mornings or workout in the evenings after you put her to bed. I know you will have to sacrifice a little sleep but it will be worth it.0

I know how hard it is! I used to work out when he was napping, but I found that I was rushing to get done because I didn't want him to wake up in the middle of it, or I had chores around the house to do or whatever. I used to run with him in the stroller until it got too cold, although now that it's warming up I may do that again. I built a lot of muscle in my arms from pushing him in the stroller, it was a great work out. Now I joined the YMCA, because they are cheaper than a normal gym and they have free child care. I LOVE it. It really is worth the money. I can take my time working out and I know he is having fun playing with other kids.
And I will get that pdf to you this afternoon, it's on the other comp and I'm about to run out the door to go to yoga.0 -
I couldn't figure out how to work out either with one child and now I have two! You are doing a DVD which is great. I have the same problem with crunches but then I started putting on a toddler DVD or TV show (The Sprout Channel is great with Sesame Street and such!) just so I could get half out in of anything that didn't require me to use the TV. I would get up early to use my treadmill or for a change of pace I used walk at the mall with her in the stroller since it was too cold outside. This gave her something to look at with all the sights and colors AND it was a great way for me to get in an extra workout if I did it during nap time.
Now with two, I walk during my lunch break at work and do my half hour of weights after dinner while they watch something on Nick Jr. or Sprout. They don't watch a lot of TV at all but anything with music is nice because I'll do crunches in with them and sing whatever the TV is singing! LOL. I do get in a 1/2 hour DVD here and there, plus it has an intense 10 minute workout that is perfect on some days!. Try different things out and see what you can do. You may have to get in 4 10-15 minute workouts throughout your day until she gets a little older. It's not easy but you can do it and soon she'll be at the age of playing with a doll or something by herself. Plus you can always use her as your weights!! My girlfriend did that to strengthen her legs!
Unfortunately, it sounds like the treadmill can only be accomplished when she's asleep right now until she gets older!! Good luck, don't get discouraged and I hope this helps!!0 -
I am a member of a gym so I dropped my kids off at the nursery to go work out. However when I needed to get stuff done around the house and it wasn't during nap time I would often put them in the pack-n-play (use it as a playpen) with some toys or strapped in the high chair with a video and a snack for a bit. I don't think either of those options would work for a whole hour though...0

I look like a bit of a mad women, but I've started swimming laps with my 1.5 year old sitting on my stomach. I started off just walking laps of the pool, which she loves, but I got bored, so we worked out how to swim. I do survival backstroke with her sitting or lying on the tummy, she wriggles around a bit, just that just adds to the work out and uses all sorts of odd muscles trying to keep her on. She absolutly loves it, and chats away to everyone else in the pool, when she gets bored we stop at one end and play and I do stomach crunch things holding onto the end.
To really add to my mad-women look, I also spend a fair bit of time singing to her as I swim, she loves incy wincy spider, and I try to quietly sing that as we go up and down the pool. What a sight!!0 -
I have friends who both run and cycle with babies.
There are specific running strollers and they have a little trailer to put behind a bike.0 -
thanks. i know i could walk or jog but i dont have the # for a jogging stroller and im in a reallly surburban area, i could circle the block a few times over the concrete but thats about it unless i pack her up, drive 30 min to a park and walk around there..which i can only do for like 20-30 min..even early, its like 85 degrees here and i cant handle the heat..if im out and its hot, i come home and can barely take care of her, i have a headache and im exhausted..the heat kicks my *kitten*. on top of that me and my bf only have 1 car between us which he takes to work, so unless h ecan get a ride and i can have the car for the day once in a while i cant make it to a place where i can really walk around, whcih is why i just do the dvds alot. but ive been doing them for a year and havent had much of a change.0

i do the 30 day shred while they sleep. I can usually convice myself that I can do 25 minutes, even on my tired days.0

I live in a really Rural area...what I would give for sidewalks! What's wrong with walking in your neighborhood? You don't need a jogging stroller to power walk. Walk as far as the sidewalks will take you and then home again! Go early in the morning before the heat sets in and in the evening. Pull the treadmill out where the tv is and use it after she goes to bed while you and your hubby are watching tv. I actually do all the "moves" to some of my videos anytime I have the tv on during the day...
Do you have stairs in the house? Walk up and down them whenever you can.
I know it's hard, but it won't be long before she's a bit bigger and it will get easier! Good luck!0 -

I have the same problem. My three year old is a nightmare if he's around when I exercise. I get up extra early and workout first thing in the morning. I also am a member of the gym, but because he cries so long whenever I leave him in the daycare, I get paged about 20 minutes into it and have to go get him. Check Craigslist for jogging strollers--you will be amazed sometimes at the deals you can find.0

I have to get up very early (before the time I know that she gets up) to workout or do it whenever she takes her nap.0

i gave in and joined a gym...they have child care on site...its nice to have that hour and half or so to myself = )0

I can't say that I did much when my girls were that age, but I started on this site when they were about 20 months old. It is hard to manage, but there are ways. I personally don't really like to exercise outside - its just an issue of mine. I plan to just deal with that soon, but my workouts consist of inside stuff. We have an elliptical and I have a bunch of dvds. For the longest time I would only workout after my girls went to bed, which is fairly late cause they don't go anywhere during the day so they can sleep in. I just had to force myself on the elliptical when they went to bed. I often chose sleep over working out though. I tried to at least follow along to the calorie limits so as not to gain any weight until I can focus on the exercise.
Now, my girls are almost 3.5 and they will try to exercise along with me. Last night they were doing the shred with me. They got in the way a bit, but not bad. Its more cute than anything. This is one of the few times I've done this with them awake so its new to me. If your daughter can occupy herself while you are working out - just do that. If you only get 20 minutes at a time, do that a couple times a day. It is hard, it is! There's no other way around it, but if you really push to make the time, you will make it. Oh, and I would choose working out over cleaning...the cleaning will be there later.0 -
I usually wait until my little guy starts getting tired or ready for his nap, and then I put him in his swing with a few toys. He just sits there playing with them and relaxing!0
-
Mine are 5 and 4 and they are still a nightmare with exercise, my daughter continually wants lifting up or grabs on to my legs and my son is pretty much the same. I try and get them to copy me and have a go but they really don't deal well with having to stand more than a centimetre away from me *lol* I do everything they are in bed. I make sure they go to bed at 7 so i have some evening. I could never get up earlier than them, i'd rather stay fat.0

I have 3 kids, aged 5, 3 and 23 months I work out when the oldest is at school, and the youngest is asleep (he normally sleeps for 2+ hours so I can get a good work out and a shower in before he surfaces again!) I put a DVD on for my 3 year old, or she goes into the playroom and plays with her toys and sometimes she joins me! I could never manage to get up before my kids as they wake at 5.30am and I flatly refuse to get up before then!!
I'm doing DVDs and I've collected several! For my cardio burn I do 20-40 minutes of Hannah Waterman (a UK actress who released a work out dvd) or Davina (a UK presenter) and then I either do the abdominals in those DVDs or I use the 20 minute solutions Blast off Belly fat. I've also got a 10 minute solutions of Pilates for if I'm sore from the previous day's work out and I've also ordered the 30 day Shred. I have got a static bike that I could use, but its buried under DH's clothes at the moment.... LOL!0 -
I have 2 kids, 3 y/o and 15 mos old. I work out early in the mornings before they wake up on weekdays. On weekends I like to sleep in as much as possible (7am as opposed to 5am lol). Since the kids are already up when I workout on weekends, I let my 3 y/o do his thing and play in the living room while I work out. I put my 15 month old in her highchair right next to me and let her have her breakfast. If she finishes, I push pause real quick and hand her some colors and paper and she entertains herself until I'm done.0

You might check into your local gym's kids clubs. Yes, it's an expense. I justify it by the fact that for much less money than preschool, I get some time to myself to workout, and my daughter get's some socialization with other kids. Win win!0

I'm not a mom, but while reading this thread a thought occurred to me. By keeping to an exercise and healthy eating regime you are teaching your son or daughter how to be healthy... and by example! I wish that my parents did this, but both of them were obese and I'm well into the overweight category. I really like the ideas of incorporating the kids into exercise, or just getting them used to you doing exercise every day.0
