Is the calorie counter for exercise on MFP accurate?

I know I'm very heavy, but am I really burning 1,300 calories in 60 minutes on the elliptical?

I'm a math-y kind of person - I like to calculate things, and I just want to know if the data is accurate. :)

That seems a little high to me. I find most exercises are right there with my HRM/calorie counter though so maybe it is correct.

The calorie count is a bit off for the elliptical as I haven't figured out what level it is set on and what resistance. I would stick with the count on the machine or splurge on an HRM for an even more accurate reading

I've found the results to be pretty accurate but you might want to compare them to the results on the actual elliptical machine if the machine has a display that shows calories burned.
  • Most pedometers and machines track the rate like every 30 seconds whereas MFP can only look at average rate over the entire time you enter - so there will always be a bit of a disagreement especially if you do intervals - but my experience with several different cardio workouts and pedometers is that both are coming in fairly close.

I know it's an extra expense, but investing in a heart rate moniter is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I never have to worry about how much I'm burning. My only regret is buying it later in the game rather than sooner.

On a seperate note, I was actually burning more than what MFP was saying! So it just might be right! =)
  • That seems extremely high!! I use the elipitical at the gym and it always tells me around 430 for every 40 minutes. ANd that is the elipitical with high resistance. It should probably be half of that. Is you equipment giving you that number or is MyFitnessPal???

honestly I'd take it with a pinch of salt - I did 17mins of jump rope tonight and according to my hrm I burnt around 115cals.. I then went to put it on mfp and it automatically worked out that I burnt 200+ which I definitely didn't do - i trust my hrm more than mfp now I have it, and it only cost me £30 which isnt too bad at all :)
