My exercise DVD came before i could get some hand weight so i made my own and they were quite good so i thought i'd share.
You need:
2 x 1L water bottles. The non disposable sort with the 'grip' around the centre is best as this give you a proper handle like the real dumbell weights.
2 x large zip-lock plastic bags (optional)
Sand
Thread bags into bottles with opening at bottle opening. Fill with sand. Zip up bag, close bottle top. Weight your weights so you know for sure that it is around 2 pounds.
The plastic bags are optional, you could just fill the bottles, but i did want to ruin the bottles for drinking which i'll do once i've bought some new proper weights.
they are slighly off-balance depending where the bottle grip is, but pretty damn good for something whipped up with things around the house. Sand was easy for me since i live in the desert and my house i on a sand dune. If you didn't have sand you could perhaps use rice or some other kind of small grain that will hopefully add up to the right weight.

Yea, at 8 pounds a gallon water would work. 1 gal = 3.78 liters. 3.78 divided into 8 = 2.110
