Hi, new to the site. I was blown away Friday by how many calories I've been taking in. The trackers are an awesome tool!!!! Intering by phone makes it simple to input the foods I eat.I've even used the bar code scanner a couple times....super cool. Anyway, I'm trying to drop around 40 lbs, get back down to a healthy weight, and make my"skinny"clothes fat clothes again.....first week under way.

Welcome to the site. I agree; entering your food on an app and being able to scan bar codes is AWESOME. I could never drive myself to get a notepad and jot down what I ate, go search how much calories it was, and add it up at the end of the day. Way too much effort.

Same thing happened to me when I started using the app - "Woah, I'm eating THAT much crap???" Nothing but cold, hard reality to get you motivated.

Without sounding like an infomercial, here's the low-down: I've stuck to my calorie goal, which is 1330, and I lost 15lbs WITHOUT EXERCISING, because I pulled a back muscle and could barely walk. I've lost an additional 5 pounds with nothing but a pull-up bar and crunches/push-ups/etc etc. I feel my key to success was simply being true to yourself and recording EVERYTHING you eat. Alcohol, shots, snacks here and there... gotta keep track of it all, and stick to a daily routine. Believe me, I never thought I'd lose so much weight by just controlling my diet like this.

I'm not sure what your calorie goal is, but I'll tell you what: going from over 2000 calories a day down to 1330 was a bit... challenging. I was hungry A LOT, since obviously my body was upset I cut out so much food. Maybe my way isn't for you, but after about a month or so, I get full off small meals extremely fast. It's a lifestyle change. You just have to stick to it.

Hope I haven't bored you out of your mind by now... good luck with your goals!
  • My calorie goal is 1740.....or so. Friday, the day I loaded the app, I took in 2850. My problem is portion control. I like the foot long sub, the whole pizza,.....the combo, upsized.lol I'm 6'1", and when I'm active, I can pretty much eat like a pig without gaining weight. But, at 41, I'm not as active, so I gotta start controlling intake. Plus, I have rising cholesterol, so I'm trying to fight that off so the doc doesn't make me start meds for it. They say you never get off them once you start.......don't want to start. So, I'm logging, eating the half sandwich, adding protein shakes for snack instead of egg mac muffins, and started boot camp at the gym on Friday. It meets 3x a week. I found an open track at the college made of that soft rubber type surface that's better for old knees, so I'm starting back running again too. Thanks for the feed back. I appreciate it.

I think you will love MFP!! I have only been using it for a little less than 2 weeks, but have gained alot of knowledge in that time. Logging food is the key for me. It was a real eye-opener at the calorie intake!! Also, I like you, have the portion control problem. But I am trying really hard to nip it in the bud!! I've lost 3lbs so far and plan to continue!!
~~I will send you a friend request so I can help with encouragement or motivation. Good Luck!!
  • Thanks.....where did you go to put that verse on your comment?
