Hi everybody. I have a concern with the way that my bf is losing weight.
I know the key to weight loss is “burn more calories than you consume,” but is that true? He parks two miles away from work, so he can get a good walk to and from work, and runs at least 3 miles a day at the gym Mon-Friday. He doesn’t eat breakfast, he eats one of those frozen meals that usually equals 300 calories or less for lunch, and eats about 500-600 calories for dinner. At the end of the day, he is usually negative calories.
My concern is that he loses a lot of weight during the week. Last week, he lost 13 lbs IN ONE WEEK, and then gained 7 over the weekend because he doesn’t work out as hard or eat as well. I am just not sure that the drastic loss and gain in the short amount of time is healthy.
Thoughts??

Why do guys do this?!!?!?!?? It's so unhealthy. He's missing out on vital nutrients, vitamins...he's probably losing lean muscle mass instead of fat because he's put himself into starvation!0

he is not eating enough! when lose weight that quickly a lot of what you lose is muscle mass. Plus I imagine, that it would be hard to keep that up for very long. It seems like a lot of times when people restrict themselves that much they ended up binging like crazy. 800 calories a day isn't even enough energy for your body to do all the things it needs to do when you're resting, let alone working out.0

Damn well first tell em to eat breakfast! THats the most important meal of the day. It usually gets your body going. That is why its called break-fast lol. Losing and gaining weight like that can only be bad. It put alot of stress on your body0

guys typically lose weight much faster than woman. So many of the men on this site have amazing weight loss success in short periods of time. However he is eating way too little. He would still have great weight loss success if he worked out the same amount of time each week but upped his calorie intake. Frick isnt he hungry??? lol He'll actually see better and long term results if he eats more!!0

The daily recommended allowance of calories is a suggested amount of calories that your body requires per day to function. If losing weight you will reduce calories by about 20% for healthy weight lose.
What your BF is doing is throwing his body into starvation mode and when he eats his body is trying to store all it can just to survive. That is why he sees a large weight gain during the weekend.
The large up and down weight change is not good.0 -

The minimum that a man should eat is 1500 calories NET (1500 plus the calories burned from exercise)0 -

It doesn't sound healthy, no. Men do lose more quickly than do women, and if he has more than 50 pounds to lose, it's going to come off very quickly at first.
But if he's only eating 900 calories per day and he's burning a minimum of 700 from exercise (7 miles), then he's going to hit a brick wall sooner or later because he's losing a lot of muscle. And pretty soon, he's going to be exhausted to boot.
He may be getting by with it because he is apparently not restricting his eating and is backing off the exercise on the weekends, but he'd be better off to develop an actual plan that includes sufficient calories.0
