Any good advice out there for "beginner running"? I have been running on a treadmill for a few weeks now, love the results body wise already, but why is it so hard to keep going while I'm on the treadmill?? In the beginning I felt like my legs were going to give out before my lungs, now it feels like both want to give out!!

Do not run too fast so that your body has more endurance to run longer, then as you feel yourself becoming fitter, then you can increase your speed. This is my two cents and what has worked for me. :flowerforyou:
  • Google "couch to 5K" and follow it to a T. Also, when the weather permits, do some running outside too. I HATED HATED HATED running and that program eased me into it. I have run 4 5K's and planning to do more. Love it!

I asked my brother and sister the same thing....and they both looked at me and said "slow down". DUH, right? So i slowed down. Now I jog at a 4.5 and can go so much longer and feel so much better.

Get outside and off your treadmill...

Is your goal speed or distance?
If distance is your goal ... start my running for 1 minute and walking for 3 minutes and then gradually increase it ...
If speed is your goal... just run as far as you can ... and repeat :)
Oh and friend me... I love running!

    couch to 5k - C25K Running Program

C25K has been designed to get just about anyone from the couch to running 5 kilometers or 30 minutes in just 9 weeks.

Thank you everyone!!! Keep the advice coming!!!
  • Try mixing up your running routine. One day run slower with the endurance goal in mind, then the next run day add in some intervals - walk for a couple minutes, sprint for a couple minutes, walk, sprint, walk, sprint ... for your allotted time. You burn a crap load of calories that way and you confuse your metabolism.

Make sure you have good running shoes...yes, they do make a big difference! Always carry water and if you can eat some carbs beforehand...I eat a plain bagel and maybe fruit...banana or raisens. Start out slowly...meaning walk first and at a good pace then jog a bit and then go back to walking. A sports watch with a timer works well in that you can set interval times for walking and jogging. Also, make sure you do some warm ups prior. Dress accordingly...its better to layer your clothes so you can remove a jacket or sweatshirt. Drive a course around the neighborhood so you know the miles. If you don't want to get a watch, pick out points to jog to like a lamp post up ahead or fire hydrant. Good luck!!

Also I find it harder to run outside and I am so jealous of those of you that do it everyday! I want to be like you!! LOL!

Not to sound redundant...but C25K. Did it last fall and it worked for me. My wife followed along a couple of months later, we are now running on a regular basis.

Follow c25k (I just did my first 5k last night!)
Google "proper running techniques and position"
Get fitted at a really good running store for proper shoes - check with people that you know are runners. I've heard to stay away from "The Running Room" staff (I know it's expensive, but it's worth it)
    Have Fun!
