If you were to design a starter kit to give to someone who is just beginning a weight loss program with up to 5 of your most helpful weight loss tools (not including MFP) what would you include?

1.) A 64oz water bottle... and tell them to drink at least that much everyday!
    2.) Good shoes
    3.) Good workout clothes
4.) An iTunes gift card so they can download some tunes to motivate them
5.) A card with an inspirational quote (ie "nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels")

Totally agree except I would make one change to that quote - and change it to be 'nothing tastes as good as being strong feels'
I'll take strong over skinny any day! (and it sends the wrong message to the young girls...)

    properly fitting shoes

a note that says to eat your NET calories (food-exercise=net)
a camera to take progress pictures
a measuring tape since this is better than a scale for tracking progress

I have to agree with the other folks: water bottle, good shoes, SCALE!, and would have to add Heart Rate Monitor if they are ready to be active.

    All of this, plus:
    A good food scale
MULTIPLE sets of measuring cups & spoons. (It's a lot easier to grab that extra clean 1/4 c. measuring cup, than have to first wash the dirty one).
    A measuring tape.

    Proper rest / recovery.

It's a big part of the whole process yet so often overlooked.

    1. Preparedness - to document what you eat and do, to cook, to make sacrfices, to truly make a lifestyle change

    2. Realistic goals - it doesn't come off in a day and can't go from a lifetime of bad habits to being ms. Or mr. Healthy perfection in a month. And a size 2 may not be right for you, but a size 10 & being healthy may be perfect.

    3. Willingness to explore- hate the gym, find what works for you. Try new foods, change things up when things aren't going in the direction you want.

    4. Strength- there are many temptations, people who try to sabotage you, and the demons in your head to contend with. Can't let them get to you and it can be hard.

    5. Pride - in every little accomplishment because its a tough road but so worth it and give yourself credit for every positive step, whether its losin. 25 lb or walking up the stairs instead of using the elevator or running a marathon.

There's all kinds of tools out there to help you lose weight but to be successful and maintain, need to get the mental game on.

    1. MIND: Positive attitude, persistence, realistic/healthy goals, perspective of this being a lifetime journey of healthy habits and not a quick fix, self-love without recrimination when the scale doesn't budge or when you felt you've messed up with nutrition/exercise
    2. NUTRITION: kitchen scale and tasty recipes to try out
    3. EXERCISE: A good HRM and cardio/strength training workouts that you find fun (otherwise, it will be hard to keep motivated)
    4. RESOURCES on proper nutrition and fitness (which includes the importance of eating back exercise calories, of course! :) )
    5. COMMUNITY: MFP, accountability from good friends and family members who will be your cheerleaders

Thanks for all the great replies! Maybe when each of you reach your goals you should make one to give to someone else you know who is struggling or just getting started. You've inspired me! Dont let your goal weight be the end of the journey :)
