Is a zero sugar diet healthy?

The Aussie Biggest Loser contestants are on a zero sugar. It includes all sugars - even those found in fruits. So I'm wondering, is this a healthy way to lose weight? Is it healthy for you at all?

you don't actually need sugar at all. I assume they're eating other carbohydrates? If they are, then it's not even out of the ordinary, just more restrictive. I don't think it's any better or worse than anything else. I wouldn't do it as it would be hard to find enough food to meet the 3000 some odd calories I need every day in order to maintain, but it's not inherently any worse than a normal diet.0

I think it;s too hard to manage. Can't live like that forever.0

nice, thanks for the info!
they are eating carbs but not a whole lot, i think? meg got told off today for eating too many vegetables due to the carbs.
@Nkauj_Lis
yeah, i agree. i could never do that.0 -
I think it is IMPOSSIBLE to go 100% sugar free...natural sugar is found in so many things,,,, you can go maybe 95-98% sugar free but from my understanding, the body needs some amount( unknown to me) of sugar ( natural)0

I seen that too, but really I like my fruit could not go with out it.
Remember we need to think lifetime, not gameshow ( and losing 4kg to keep immunity lol )0 -

idek because tiff (the trainer) puts a huge emphasis on ZERO sugar.0 -

I don't think it's impossible on a low or ketogenic diet. But I wouldn't do it. I don't see any reason to do it, it doesn't help you lose weight any faster, and if you don't plan on that type of diet for life, you'll just have to learn how to eat again after you go off of it.
I blogged about low carb here:

feel free to read up on it, it's an overview of how the body handles carbohydrates and what a low carb diet entails.0 -
But you'd be missing so many wonderful macro and micro nutrients if you stopped eating fruit!!! It wouldn't be something I'd ever consider. I think fruit is just as important as vegetables, just not in the same quantity.0

Personally I can see a life without any "added" sugar, but no sugar at all when its naturally in fruits and veggies. Smh, I don't think its possible. I also agree we should be thinking way of life, not a temporary solution. All the best.0

Hi - apparently sugar is the only nutrient that there is not an RDA (recommended daily allowance) for.
The practical side of cutting out sugar is pretty hard though!

I may be wrong but I don't think the trainer would use that as the long term diet? I think it was just because Meg needs to drop her weight gain this week and I think you do lose more weight by cutting out sugar completely.
I could definitely not cut out fruit and things for more than a few days...0 -

there is an RDA requirement for it, but they don't call it sugar, they call it carbohydrates (or more specifically digestible carbohydrates, as fiber is also carbohydrates, your body just can't break down carbs in those specific forms). Remember, carbs are just sugar (a different type of sugar than sucrose usually, but still.
But in the case of the trainer, I assume they are talking about only sucrose and fructose.0 -
Cutting all sugar IS possible!! The ketogenic diets I've looked at are used quite successfully to treat epilepsy and to heal cancer!! Don't label me a looney on this one until you've read the research. Sugar IS the devil, folks, no doubt about it. The ketogenic diet is not a zero carb diet, but the carbs you consume are all from veggies, like greens, tomatoes, red peppers, raw onions, green beans, etc. The ratio of fat to protein is 1:1, much like paleo or primal diets.
Not arguing that fruit is bad in general, but for some who are insulin resistant, it can stall fat loss.0 -

Tomatoes and red peppers both have sugars.0 -
I am ketogenic and have my carbs very, very low. No it is NOT possible to have zero sugar IF one is eating vegetables. Green leafy vegetables likely only have a trace, but it's there nonetheless. Other veggies have even more sugar. However, is eating a teaspoon or so per day of natural sugar in vegetables likely to be problematic? Not.
Can one live without sugar completely? Yes, the Inuit did. But they did eat berries for a short time every year.
I don't find it very hard to eat a very low carb diet and it's permanent for me. It's not hard because I love not feeling sick and hungry and I've always preferred an animal based diet.0 -
I don't think I'd trust my brain enough to try and let it get most of its energy from ketones.0

I can totally see not eating fruits and still being healthy. I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around zero sugar though, because every vegetable I looked up had some amount of sugar in it (albeit a small amount in the low-carb green veggies), and I cannot be down with no veggies. :noway:0
