So I got my scale yesterday to weigh myself to start the April 10lb Challenge and weighed myself 191.8. And this morning I weighed myself 193.4 WTH!!!! How can this be possible.. I have been drinking more than 8 oz of water a day (I retain alot of water)..... is this normal for the amount of water I am consuming??? Also I have not been eating past my recommended sodium intake......

  • STOP weighing yourself every day!!! seriously...once a week.

8oz is not enough, you should be drinking 64oz at least. And try weighing in once a week or once every 2 weeks instead

    Two words of advice:

    1. Don't weigh yourself every day. It can be maddening trying to figure out the fluctuation.
    2. Weigh yourself at the same time every day on the same scale. When and where is up to you, but consistency is the key.

Plus, if you retain a lot of water that would explain the instant weight "gain".

I've been weighing about once every two weeks. That way I don't worry about it and progress looks huge.

Normal daily fluctuations. Can vary by several pounds, depending on the person. I *do* get on the scale almost every day just because I want to know what my normal daily fluxes are so I know if I really need to worry or if I'm losing real weight. Mine has roughly about a 2 lb range. If I go outside of that, I know either I'm doing something right or wrong and have to modify (or continue) to get the results.
  • Yeah that is part of the reason why I didnt want to purchase a scale..... I am one to see the diffrence in the way clothes fit me but to go along with the Challenge I had to weigh my self.

Thank you for the advise, i have hid the scale under my dresser and it will not come back out until next friday to post my check ins.

Also does anyone know what i can do about the water retention???

Drink lots of water. Your weight divided by two equals the number of ounces of water you should be drinking.(or so I've heard) And watch your sodium intake!

For water retention, drink more water. Look up a post a posted recently, Stop Gaining Weight by Drinking Water.

The sodium intake can be a factor with the retention. I know if I am way over on the sodium I am bloated the next day.
  • Potassium and sodium have an inverse relationsip in the body. So if you consume adequate potassium, then sodium gets excreted, and where sodium goes, water follows! Try eating a banana in the morning and other potassium rich foods throughout the day and don't really change much else. The "water weight" should even out after that. BUT don't consume too much potassium either because it can be detrimental.
I would Google search potassium and see how much you should have, and good food sources. Most fruits and vegetables are good soures especially if they are yellow or orange colored. :)
