coffee staining teeth?

I've started drinking coffee in the morning but I'm concerned with staining my teeth. Any tips? Should I use a straw or just bleach my teeth? Or drink energy shots instead?

I will not give up my coffee or red wine. Both do a number on my porous teeth (some people have no problem). I use whitening toothpaste and do the whitening strips for 2 weeks about every 2 months or so. I use Listerine Whitening strips - most people swear by crest, but they make my teeth way too sensitive.

I drink tea, coffee, and red wine and still have a super white smile...so I think the stain potential of those items is exaggerated. Still, doesn't hurt to use bleach strips from time to time. I recommend Crest Pro Whitening...or 3D white...whatever they call them these days.
  • Whitening toothpaste. It's amazing. Before I had braces I use to drink coffee like crazy and started working for an orthodontist and he suggested it and also whitening mouthwash for the times you can't brush.
  • Things like 5hr energy use a small amount of caffein and mostly B6 B12 and Niacin to give you the long sustained energy. One cup of coffee has the same amount of caffeine, but you 'crash' off after you've digested it (within an hour usually) I would suggest finding a good quality mult-mineral/vitamin for women. One or two of those will keep you alert and actively going the whole day! I drink coffee too in the morning, one cup only, and I have to use whitening toothpaste and mouthwash, plus the crest bleach strips once in a while. No straws though, that leads to premature wrinkles around your mouth! :) Good luck!

I have a friend that uses her sons old sippy cups or straws LOL. Baking soda works great for this and you can mix it with hydrogen peroxide and rinse with it about once a week.

This might be a little off topic, but I drink a lot of coffee and my teeth were already stained, but a few months ago I started making my own tooth paste and my teeth are much whiter now (and my gums are actually healthier). The toothpaste I make is a combination of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide (3%), salvia natural sweetener, and peppermint oil. It's worked great for me and my whole family.

Edit: Just saw the other comment about this, I completely agree it works.

I'm a hygienist. I drink coffee - at one point, every day, but never experience staining. I brush my teeth after I've had my coffee and if I can't do that, then I make sure to swish out with water or mouth wash. Don't worry too much about it. Use a whitening tooth paste which has bigger grits to help scrub surface staining - but don't overdo it with the whitening toothpaste because it can wear away at your enamel. I switch off between that and sensodyne. If your oral hygiene is good, I wouldn't worry too much about staining, then again, it can depend on how the bacteria in your mouth takes that coffee. Happy drinking!

I concur. Results are quick (if not immediate)! Smoking/red wine/coffee (back when I smoked and drank) stains were about 80% better after brushing just once.

I swear by Crest 3D. My dental hygenist was commenting that I must not drink coffee because my teeth aren't stained......I've been drinking coffee for almost 30 years.

    This!

I worked as a dental assistant for 10 years, this is what every doctor I've worked with has said. One hygenist I worked with preferred drining through a straw- not just coffee but soda as well. I prefer to simply brush after every meal and drink. It keeps the teeth healthy and brite, and brushing with toothpaste curbs some sugar cravings. Bonus:drinker:

For the hygenists on here...my teeth are kinda transparent at the bottom like the enamal is thin. I am nervous about bleaching because of this. Also using too much whiting toothpaste. I want to keep all the enamal I have! lol I haven't had any fillings ever and besides the thiness at the bottom my teeth are good. (except the massive grinding and clenching I do at night(yes I sleep with a bite guard)) I never thought about the straw giving wrinkles, guess I won't do that. I'll just brush right after I guess. I add baking soda to my tootpaste sometimes already.

Are those 4 hour energy shots bad for you? I have tried taking prenatal vitamins but I am always tired. Had bloodwork done and thyroid checked. Tired working out. Nothing helps but energy shots or coffee :(

Second to not using the straw!! My mom used one all the time and has wrinkles around her mouth almost like a smoker. Because of that - I never, ever use a straw unless I absolutely have to! I'm almost fanatic about it (blush).

and just an environmental aspect: straws are like, one of the worst things to use.. the plastic is almost completely not recycleable, but not only that, nobody recycles them, ever, even if they could be. the carbon output just so someone doesn't have to drink from the lip of a cup is a total waste of energy and elitism.

if you must use a straw, use a re-useable one.
