I am wondering if anyone else here is taking this ghastly medication while trying to lose weight. So far I have pretty much been maintaining my weight using fitness pal, which from what I have read is pretty good when you are on this medication. I am hoping once I am off it will drop a bit more. I started fitness pal just before I went on the medication and lost about 5 pounds but now nothing even with low calories and carbs. Anyone else in the same situation?

I just tapered off this medicine about 3 weeks ago. I severe asthma and when I have an attack I have to take this. This last time I was on for almost 2 months right after I started MFP, I was really worried about gaining weight but to my surprise I was still able to lose. I just increased my water intake and cut out as much sodium as possible to help with water retention.

It is hard but possible you just have to stay focused and continue to workout.

I would suggest not trying to lose weight while taking prednisone since you're on it short term, rather just maintain where you're at right now. Prednisone causes sodium and water retention, which will simulate gaining weight. It also screws with your metabolism, so my recommendation would be to try to eat as healthy as you can while on the medicine and then once you're off it you can focus on dropping the pounds again. Good luck! :)
  • I was recently put on the steriod for a severe allergic reaction I had while doing my workout... I wasn't on the drug for too long, I am not sure what your situation is.. I did not notice a change in my hunger, but it made me wired and almost a little amped up. I had a tough time sleeping and staying asleep at night too. I know that alone can affect your dieting habits. It made me cranky.... It does however stimulate blood flow, which can be a huge benefit for other aspects of your life :)... I am very into AdvoCare products (I am a distributor) that probably helped suppress the hunger cravings for me... I would ask your doctor if there is any drug interactions that could pose a problem, but be sure to take your Multi-Vitamins... They are such an important key to helping you lose weight. I wish you well!

    Hey,

Maybe a little ray of hope for you here.I have been on this drug for six years, with doses varying from 80mg per day to a current 15mg and yes I can honestly say that not only can you lose weight while taking it,but you can accelerate the reduction by improving your health,I hope this gives you a little motivation and just add me if you need any further help.

    Take Care and good luck.

Well it all depends I have been on prednisone for the last 20 some years usually only 5 or 10mg per day(depends how I feel) Occasionally gets up there to 80 mg, but I have to take lasix( a water pill with it..besides I have renal failure) So if you have to be on it for a long time talk with your doctor about it. Also stay away from salt...My hands swell instantly anytime I have anything high in sodium. To me the huinger thing isnt an issue so much since I have anorexia and really dont get hungry any more. But if you are going to be on it long term talk wit your dr and see what they suggest....good luck
I have been over weight before and I did lose when I was on it so it can be done!

Hi - I have been taking many steroids to include prednisone for approx 1 yr - started out on extemely heavy duty doses of prednisone while in the hospital for 14 days and gained something like 16 lbs upon leaving the hospital. I was so upset - chipmunk cheeks and my rosacea flared up so bad that my face was an awful shade of purple. I was able to loose most of those 16 lbs but seem to be having a difficult time loosing any additional weight now. Was able to loose 11 lbs - 6 of them since starting MFP on 2/19. I am eating very well and am on 1200 calories - but I do not eat all of my calories which may be a problem. Money is an issue right now so I to do daily floor exercises at home and try walk when the weather permits but the scale still hasn't budged. I have been able to loose 1' off my waist and approx 2 1/2" off my hips.

The hunger pains you feel may actually be the prednisone doing a nbr on yr stomach. I was told to take an acid reducer which helped me a lot.

I try and limit my sodium intake but I also have high blood pressure. Read yr labels very carefully as sodium is in everything - even a cup of fat free milk - it's crazy. Just remember that slow and steady is a good thing.

Well since i started the drug I have been able to lose 12 lbs. I am happy with that. I have 15 to go but at least i know it is possible. I have been eating about 1200 calories daily. I think since starting to use fitness pal I have been eating much healthier and I can really watch my salt intake so that is good. I think I need to exercise more but work and kids has put a damper on that. Hopfully with warmer weather that will become easier as well.
    Thanks for the info everyone!
