Hi, my name is Ashley and I'm 19 years old. I'm sick of gaining weight, and I can't seem to stop lately. I don't eat a lot, and I do exercise. I enjoy kickboxing and going for walks. Despite that, I still gain the weight. I'm sensitive about it, even though my boyfriend says I look great. I don't feel great, though. I feel tired a lot, and I'm afraid to dress without my sweatshirts again.
When I was younger, I had a weight problems that was hard to deal with. At age 12, I was already in a size 16 pants. Not exactly something that gives good self-esteem.
Last summer I was happy with my weight. I got down to 140, and felt amazing. I wasn't afraid to wear a bathing suit. I was also walking four miles a day in the blistering sun, and doing floor exercises on top of that. I would love to get back down to that weight, with people that encourage me to lose weight in a healthy way. I don't care if I don't lose weight, if I tone up and feel good. That's my biggest goal, really. Any suggestions would be helpful to me.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I would love it if I could be happy about my body once again.

Well, MFP will help you with that. Add some friends that can give you encouragement. We are all here for the same reason
Add me if you want.

Having friends with the same goals as me will definitely help, I think

If you really have no idea why you're not losing weight, I would go see a doctor and ask for some blood labs. I did that and found out that I had Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, a metobolic disorder that was making me gain weight like I couldn't believe and was making it impossible to lose it.
If you're working out at even a moderate intensity most days of the week, and watching what you eat, even if it is only a little, you should see some difference. MFP is terrific for that. It'll get you going on a daily calorie plan and track your exercise so you can see what you put in, and get something great out of it. Best of luck to you. I know it's a struggle.0 -
I was wondering if I have a thyroid problem, though my doctor always insists I'm fine. What are some symptoms of PCOS?0

I was wondering if I have a thyroid problem, though my doctor always insists I'm fine. What are some symptoms of PCOS?
Weight build-up in the belly (apple shape), excessive hair growth (like facial hair, etc), problems with your period (or lack of one altogether) that can cause infertility, acne, male-pattern hair loss, high cholesterol, high insulin levels (this was what was causing me to not lose weight), hormonal imbalances (too much testosterone most of the time), cysts on your ovaries (the cysts do not cause the disorder, they're just a symptom), skintags, darker patches of skin (especially around the neck and armpits), and more that I'm sure I'm forgetting. PCOS can only be fully diagnosed with bloodwork and sometimes, ovarian ultrasounds.
It makes me feel ugly on the outside. *sigh*
Anyway, if you have any family history of a thyroid disorder, have it checked annually.0 -
I feel like I show some of those symptoms. I can't have a period on my own anymore. I haven't had one since I was 16. That was the last one I had on my complete own. If I go off my birth control, I simply don't have one. The doctor told me I have amennorhia (or however it's spelled), but that I shouldn't worry. I also have a higher cholesterol than I should, but it goes down when I have olive oil in my diet. I am also an apple, or at least, that's how I feel. I think I need to go get checked out. Now I don't feel normal anymore....0

If you do seek a PCOS diagnosis, be prepared for the long haul. It took me 3 years, in which I gained 80 pounds, to get a diagnosis and start on a couple of medications that helped me. I hope you find some answers.0

How many blood tests should I get? Is one doctor's diagnosis enough or should I seek more? Will I be able to have kids if it turns out I do have PCOS?0

One GOOD doctor will do it, they'll do a full metabolic panel, and order an ultrasound. That about covers it. Will you be able to have kids if you have PCOS? Hard saying. Some people do it naturally, usually through weight loss, believe it or not. Some people take fertility drugs and manage to carry out a happy and healthy 9 months. Some people try for years and years, even with fertility drugs, and never have a viable pregnancy. Then there's me. I have 3 kids, alive and ornery. I wasn't even trying for the first 2. My symptoms weren't bad until after I had my last. Had I waited...who knows. I may be one in the sea of women who want only one thing in their entire lives but can't easily have it. It's sad, and I have a kind of survival guilt, having had 3 kids. It's weird. I know.0 -
Well, I hope that I can have kids, and that I don't have PCOS. I do know something isn't right with me, though. I can just feel it...and besides, shouldn't I have a period on my own since I'm otherwise healthy? And I had my first period at 11. It was regular for awhile, then completely disappeared on me, until I started birth control. I don't know what else my issue could be though.
Is there a way you can completely get rid of your PCOS? It doesn't sound comfortable. I hate that you have it.0 -
it is possible to have kids with pcos, I have two girls, but it did take me 10.5 years to have the first one!,
this was more a mis-diagnosis as I don't get the cysts so when they did a scan so it kept being dismissed.
Loosing weight can be a big help to fertility, as well as avoiding things like alchol and caffine.
Good luck with your journey0 -

No. It's with me for life. I just manage the symptoms and count my blessings. It isn't comfortable. Physically, mentally, or emotionally. It can ruin peoples' lives.I hate that you have it.
Me, too, Sister. Me too. I hate that anyone has it, but it's more common than people know, than even doctors know. And treatment can PCOS patients such a better quality of life....0 -
I'm glad that it's manageable, at the least. It sounds absolutely horrible, though. I am glad that you have kids, despite this. I know that I want them some day, so this makes me feel a bit less stressed about it. I'm definitely going to get some tests done once I get some money. I just started a new job, so things are changing really fast for me, and I haven't gotten paid yet.

How is it possible to have PCOS with no cysts?
Because not everyone has every symptom, or their symptoms just aren't that severe. It's possible to have PCOS and be thin as a rail, or have perfect skin, or a head full of thick hair, or no hair where it's not supposed to be. There is kind of a typical look for a cyster, but that doesn't mean anything. only bloodwork, and possibly an ultrasound can diagnose.0 -
Do you know of any other possibilities for why I have some symptoms? I think my doctor checked me for PCOS when I was 17, but then again, I don't remember him doing blood work. Or doing an ultrasound. I just know he felt around for cysts. I had an ultrasound at 15, but that was just because he wanted to see why I wasn't having normal periods, and they could only say it was amenorrhia. So, I have no clue what to think right now. I've even been thinking of switching doctors...0
-
I have no idea. There are several metabolic syndromes, and I really couldn't say. If you're concerned get that bloodwork done, and go from there. If there's an issue, they'll find it in the bloodwork.0
-
Thank you! You've been a big help. My health has been concerning me a lot lately. I feel a lot better when I've lost weight, but I never feel completely right regardless of that. So, the way to go is blood work, just like you said0

You're welcome and good luck!0
