HOLY SODIUM BATMAN!

*that picture is my idea of a good time! ha*

I'll just start off by saying Cottage Cheese is on of my FAVORITE foods in this world. I've loved it since I can remember. It's delicious, tangy, delicious and....did I mention delicious? I can eat it plain (my preferred way) or with salt/pepper (rare), with fruit (not a fan but I will if I have no choice). I find I love cottage cheese in a savory way..plain with toast or with some crackers.

Only after starting using this site did I realize how much sodium is in cottage cheese. It's so high that it baffles my mind. You get a measly half a cup with 400mg of sodium! Now, I'll say this before I started this whole new way of living I could down a whole cup or 2 of cottage cheese in a days time. When I say it's my favorite food (it should be it's own food group!) it really is high on the list.

I'd be scared to try low/reduced sodium cottage cheese. Has anyone tried it? Is there a such thing? There's not really a HUGE difference in 2% cottage cheese and 4% cottage cheese in regards to sodium. The 2% has 360mg and the 4% has 400mg in 1/2 a cup. I'd choose 4% over 2% any day because I'm a texture person and the cottage cheese has to be the right texture for me to eat it.

Does the good out way the bad? It's high in protein, calcium, potassium and it's fairly low in calories (in moderation). That is my main goal right now is watching my calories and fat and it really doesn't interfere with that. I will have to gain control over my sodium eventually and I was hoping to learn along the way. I find when I have cottage cheese the likelihood of me going over sodium is fairly high. I'm not TOO worried about it right now just curious if anyone has tried low sodium cottage cheese or if they even make it?

For me personally, the low sodium (if I could find it here) would largely be dependent upon what is in it. I don't eat chemicals, so if the lower sodium was clean, sure! I find that because it is salt, I only need 1/4 c. to take care of a craving.

Breakstone's has a low sodium cottage cheese. It is very good!! It has 290 grams of sodium per serving vs. 400 grams in the regular kind.

There are plenty of other foods that you could have with low sodium to have on days that you need your cottage cheese fix. My dad is on a low sodium diet and while some foods take some getting used to many you wouldnt even know cuz they use potassium for that "salty" taste. Also if you find yourself going over in sodium make sure to drink plenty of extra water to help dilute it and flush it out of your system quicker...bananas are also good to flush out sodium.

I love cottage cheese, too!!! Gotta be 4%, and I prefer large curd over small. So yummy yummy. I like mine in a savory way, too, no fruit for me, just a big heaping bowl with maybe some veggies or a sandwich... Cucumber boats with cottage cheese in the middle are my absolute fave!

I can only eat my cottage cheese when I plan for it, due to the sodium content :grumble: I have never seen low sodium, but I would be willing to try it. What I try to do is eat the cottage cheese as a meal, and all the things I eat with it have little to no sodium. Like a whole bunch of veggies - carrots, cucumbers, celery, and then maybe some grapes (which don't go NEAR the cottage cheese). Or use it as the dressing on a salad.

That's all I've got. Sorry, wish I had better advice!

It's not really a craving I'm trying to curve. I love cottage cheese and I eat it because I like it. I don't think I crave it like chocolate. I drink tons of water. Yesterday was 21 cups ...so I know I'm diluting it and flushing it pretty good which is why I'm not 100% worried over it but I just want to know good tricks to start getting it under control. Thank you!

I have always loved cottage cheese, I tend to get the sainsburys be good to yourself less than 2% with onion and chive....78 cals, 11g protein, 5g carbs, 1.5g fat, 0.20g sodium per 100g. a pot of that and a teaspoon and i'm a happy girl!
