You're Breaking my Sweat...

No offense to all of you guys out there who love to socialize in the gym, but does anyone else get irritated by people who feel the need to constantly slow you down by making small talk in the gym? I feel bad, but from my athlete mentality, I go to the gym to handle business... nothing more, nothing less. I know there's different atmospheres between a Gold's Gym, a Bally's and a 24Hour Fitness... but is it rude that I walk around the gym with a straight face so people don't bother me and i don't lose my workout high? who else doesn't like the gym small talk and... am i being rude?

i agree. i don't mind saying hi as i pass you, or giving the smile and nod. and i don't mind chatting if i'm waiting for a class to start, or while i'm getting changed or whatever, but i don't want to waste my precious time talking when i'm exercising.0

Well, I know exactly what you're talking about, and between being a local here and working at a major sports apparel retailer, I can't do ANYTHING without bein interrupted... And since it's been over 80 pounds total lost now, I get a LOT of people who wanna stop and ask me questions and chat, or who stare at me for (literally) days before they realize who I am and are like "Whoa... you look amazing, no wonder I don't recognize you!"
Don't get me wrong, I hecka appreciate the recognition and props, but there's a time and a place, and 5 minutes of working "halfway" ends up costing me lots of exercise calories and those little suckers are getting harder to come by the more I tune this well oiled machine that you find yourself staring at (there's mirrors DUH)... So ya, I hear that complaint all day long!! I just try to wave, take a drink, then I take my towel and swipe a ton of sweat off my face, and toss the towel on the treadmill, and turn up the mph... The point seems to get across, plus I burn the extra calories that way!!0 -
I find this the really awkward thing about going to the gym with other people. Like when my mother-in-law watches the kids so we can go to the gym together, it's like... Do we talk? Do we ignore each other? I think we both get a better workout if we do the ignoring thing.0

I guess I'm the only one who likes to talk to people in the gym but only when I'm on the treadmill it makes the time go way faster for me. My daughter trains in the gym but most of the people she trains with have the same goals the (2012) Olympics so when their in between their sets they are constantly rooting each other on. Never to busy for a cheer or a good job, and this is their job. They are there 2 times a day 6 days a week 3 to 4 hours a session. But it also depends on your mind set your a get in and get out kinda girl which is fine and certainly not rude. But for me i like to go and enjoy myself and if I'm lucky enough to meet someone and make me laugh and make the time go faster yay for me. So the moral to the story is to each his/her own.0

It's definitely a tricky situation in the gym... i just wanted to make sure i wasn't blatantly coming off as RUDE... it's true though, we all have different goals and a different focus when we step in the gym. I guess just bc of my association with the gym as a place to handle business, i don't socialize much. i love meeting new people, but don't break my sweat i just worked sooo hard for lol. Glad to see I'm not the only one though.0
