Weight loss without working out?

Has anyone lost weight without working out much? I don't mind working out and I actually find it enjoyable-I used to spend a lot of time in the gym, usually up to 2 hours. I feel like every time I work out though, whether it's running, walking, interval training, elliptical, or bike, my legs bulk up especially my calves. I want to get lean and not bulky. Just wondering if anyone else feels this way or has any ideas? Thanks!

When I did WW the firs ttime (after birth of my first child), I didn't do much exercise (other than walks w/ baby in stroller) . I lost the most weight during this time just through diet. FWIW, weight loss is like 95% diet and 5% exercise. But exercising is more about keeping your body healthy through strenthening your cardiovascular system and muscles. I'm surprised to hear you get bulky with the exercising you've done in the past, though.0

There is some evidence that dieting is better than exercise for weightloss, and basically, you can't out-train a bad diet.

But I am sure there are ways you can stay active without getting bulky. Others might have suggestions.0 -
MFP is set up with a calorie deficit to allow you to lose weight at your chosen rate of loss without doing a stitch of exercise. IF you set your profile up with a goal of weight loss (0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2lbs) then just eating at your caloric goal should see weight loss barring excessive amounts of sodium (water retention) and too much of the wrong fats etc.
The exercise will make sure you're toned up to look good at your new lower weights along the journey though!0 -
I have noticed that when it comes to working out that I bulked up at first but things have slowly been leaning back out. I think that it has to do with the fat that sits on top of the muscles. As the fat burns and is lost, everything has been looking a lot leaner. I never thought my calves would be this small and toned since I have had big legs since I was a kid.
This whole process is about feeling better so I suggest that you do what makes you feel good. For me that means working out even though sometimes it means changes in my body that I don't like. At the end of the day its about having a full and healthy life, not about what every inch of me looks like in the mirror and to others.0 -
my mother actually lost about 50 lbs a couple years ago just changing her eating habits. she can't really work out much cuz of her arthritis and an old knee injury, and something else with her back, i forget what. anyways, she was able to do it, but she's mentioned several times that she would've liked to have been able to tone up while she was at it.
as for getting lean and not bulky, have you looked into pilates or yoga? i do pilates myself on my "easy workout" days - supposedly it's great toning without bulking. i've also heard a lot of people getting all excited about summer coming cuz they can go workout in the pool, like water aerobics or swimming? i dunno. i've never really had that problem, and all the girls i've ever known who DO bulk up easily were all powerlifters, so they didn't see it as a problem, you know?
just some thoughts, things to look into.0 -
Thanks for the comments! I also did WW before without much exercise and was able to lose a decent amount. I'm hoping the same thing will happen this time around. I like working out so I'm thinking I'll do a little hear and there throughout the week to stay healthy. Lovelysnugs- I've tried pilates before and I think that sounds like a good idea to incorporate instead of all the running. Thanks!0
