Just got a heart rate watch with the chest strap. Trying to figure out how to use it. I was surprised it didn't ask for how much I weigh. Is that normal?

Hmmm . . . that does seem weird. Can you scroll through the menu at all? Are there settings?

I have a Polar F7. You can go through the menu for settings and data that has already been saved . . . .

What brand? HRMs don't necessarily need the weight.. depends on all the features.

Mine (Polar FT7) asked me what I weigh during the setup.

I don't see how it could possibly calculate the proper calories burned without a weight as a data point. It could do a general calorie burn rate, but not as accurate as it could be I guess.

If your HRM isn't asking for your weight then you got jipped! There's no way to accurately count cals burned w/o that information.

My heart rate monitor also does not ask for weight. I have a polar FT1. What it does tell you is how long you have exercised and what your average heart rate was (along with max heart rate) for the time that you exercised. Figuring out your calories burned requires doing some math based on calories burned per minute at a given heart rate. I had some testing done that told me what I burn in certain heart rate zones, otherwise there are general calorie calculators and heart rate zones available on the web based on your age (not sure about weight, but there must be since that's what the formulas that the monitors use would be based on). It might take a bit more work from you, but the information can be attained. If it isn't what you were expecting, you may be able to return it and get something more like what you were hoping for.
