Howdy?

Hi, I'm Erin (college student from Virginia). Where to begin? I've been fat since..... forever? I've always been the fat kid. Who's Erin? The fat kid. Of course.
Well, that I want to change. It's just hard because: I love cooking and I love eating. BUT, know what? I love myself a lot more so maybe I can make some friends here and we can support each other? I'd love to see some people from my graduating class and for their jaws to just hit the floor.

But vanity isn't really why I want to shed pounds.
I enjoy nature, and being outside, and I hate just being tired and not being able to keep up with myself. There's so much I want to do, like rock climb, and hike.

I weigh 224 right now. My DREAM goal is somewhere around 150. Realistically I'm happy around 170.
Right now I'm on a 1200 cal, no soda, tea and water diet. I walk 15-20 min a day and work on my arms, plus I'm always walking around campus. I eat yogurt and take B12 in the morning, and always have a healthy lunch and dinner. I still need a lot of help. The numbers just don't seem to be going down.
So wish my luck and please feel free to add me and offer any advice, don't be afraid! Unless you're a fiber bar I won't bite!!!!

Hey Erin! I just started this week and we weight about the same. I am eating about 1200 calories a day and increase my cardio workouts. Does your college have a gym where you can work out on a consistent basis? I have a friend who was on the Biggest Loser a couple of years ago and she said the biggest thing she learned is you have to burn calories to lose weight. Good Luck. We can do this. Sharon

I tried to do the 1200 net calories a day thing and find that it did not work. I would try to stick to what MFP says you should be having. You could very well be putting your body in starvation mode, which hangs onto the weight.

I recently started to make sure I was eating the calories that MFP says I should have, and have seen better results. Give that a shot :)

This is very true! Plus it is good for your heart and lungs as well! If your campus doesn't have a gym, just try walking or jogging around more. Try to exercise at least 4 times week for at least 30 mins a day!

Well were do I begin,,, I have never had to worry about weight until about 5 years ago and for some reason my weight just started to climb. I work out at least 45 min. a day have tons of stairs to climb daily at work and am really trying to keep a 1200 cal. diet. It's hard work but I know if we stick to it we will not only feel better but our life will for ever be changed... Keep up your attutide and always rememeber there are others out there far worse off than us...

Hi Erin, I love your reasons for doing this! I get the vanity, but mostly it should be for us! My suggstion is exactly what scmcgee said. Find a way to work out more. You really need to do enough cardio to get your heart rate going. If you dont have access to a gym, find a building with a lot of levels and do a luckbunch of trips up and down the stairs. Good luck!
  • I guess I need to be... eating just a little bit more!
And we do have a gym, but it's usually all full up, with members of the sports teams, but I can try to wedge myself in. After the semester ends (this month) I'll be doing kickboxing Tues. and Thurs. but until then I can increase the amount of time I walk. It's just hard, because I needed leg braces, my legs aren't straight, so they hurt more.

No pain no gain right? :D
    Thanks everyone!
  • Thank you guys, I mean it!
I have a few ideas, if the gym is full, where I can get some fast paced walking/jogging done, and I know a great empty stairwell no one uses during my lunch break. :)

One question, usually I eat around... 1000- 1200 cal but MFP says I need around 1500 on my page? Just a bit more than I'm eating. What's a good snack I could have that won't ruin my diet?

Nuts are usually pretty. Or if you like pepperoni sticks like I do, I get the turkey and chicken ones by Freybe's :). Make sure you eat what mfp says ur net should be
  • Hi and welcome to MyFitnessPal! I love this site! It is helpful in so many weighs :blushing: ! I love watching the ticker change as my weight goes down, I love the non-ending support. I love the calorie counter.....

I am 49 years old and have fought the battle of the bulge for decades! I yo-yo dieted unsuccessfully for eons! Finally, at the urging of my cardiologist I had Lap-Band Surgery on Jan 31st 2011. I am now 39 pounds lighter and am about halfway to my goal weight!
I am now able to maintain eating small meals and am ONLY eating healthy foods for the first time in my life! I feel great, except for my recent hysterectomy which I have to still recover from! I can't weight  to hit the gym in 6 weeks! I had been walking 2 miles a day on the treadmill, working with a ball and dumbbells until my most recent surgery!

I would definitely increase cardio exercises to 3-4 days a week, which is what is recommended. You also need to walk at least 30 minutes a day, a "brisk" walk if you can! I had to work my way up to brisk! Get a pedometer it is very helpful and gives you extra incentive because you WANT to do better each walk! I started out walking a few hundred feet and now I walk 2 miles a day! Make sure all the calories you take in are Nutrition! All healthy foods! Treating yourself once a week or so doesn't hurt IF you have the willpower to stop there! A few bites, not the whole pie etc...

Your college may even have a Nutritionist on staff you can talk to, ask your counselor! There may be a Nutrition Class and Fitness Class, take it next Semester, you will learn a lot!

I wish you all the best!
