Hi everyone!

My name is Sherry and I joined this program yesterday as I went to the DR and was diagnosed with High BP and Diabetes. I have 3 months to get my self in gear before he will start putting me on meds. I am hoping to not have to do that. My parents both have HBP and my mom has DB too... so my outlook is NOT good. lol.

Here is to a new, healthier me!

I welcome any and all information and support! Feel free to friend me!!!!!

Great to have you!! Feel free to add me as a friend if you like. I wish you luck on your weight loss journey!!
  • You can do it!! Just because your parents have these issues does not mean you have to follow. Healthy habits, such as balanced diets and exercise, seem to be the "cure all" for everything. Good luck and keep posting your progress :)

My brother in law is on here - he just got taken off BP meds a couple weeks ago, after losing 25 pounds. My husband is trying to reach that goal too.

2 biggies - watch your sodium intake - make your initial goal 2,000 or less per day AND water - lots of water - it will help flush out the sodium, which is a big factor in high BP. If you find yourself going over on sodium, drink extra water to help flush it out.

Best wishes in your weight loss / diet journey.

Those are two of the motivating factors for me to finally deal with my weight too. I had high BP for sure, looked like I was on the fast track to diabetes, started getting blood clots in my legs, family history of HBP, stroke, etc. Sometimes I'm still amazed at how much my body has changed over the past 3 years. It's worth working for. This is your life - and your QUALITY of life - you're working towards!
  • This is the place to be!! Best of luck to you on your journey to health! =)

welcome! please feel free to friend me, i am here for heart health too (HBP runs in my family).

the best advice I can give that will really get you on par with healthy eating is to start tracking and paying attention to your sodium intake. following the american heart association DASH diet (recommended daily intake of sodium = 1500 mg/day) really made me wake up to what i was eating. when i realized how many mg of sodium my "lean" frozen meals had in them, i pitched that habit to the curb pretty fast!

it only takes a few weeks to start noticing a difference in your blood pressure, and the great thing is you will find that you won't starve or feel miserable--if anything you will feel energized!

for diabetes, you can track your sugar intake, too, along with cals, carbs, fat, etc.

and remember to drink at least eight glasses of water! it really does help.

    good luck!!

this is sure a great place to get your started :) a hint, make sure you track your sodium for the HBP. it runs in my family, and even though i am lucky enough to not have a problem with it, i am positive that tracking my sodium here along with just eating better in general, will allow me to stay lucky and not have to deal with the same things my parents have had to.

    good luck!!

  • Welcome....I understand your determination. I have been on HB pressure bills for 2yrs and now my DR tells me that if I return and the lab test still show my LDL asbeing high, I will be prescribed high choloestrol medicine. I don't think so!!! I don't want to take the HBP pills less known the HC pills. My goal is to eat better and lose this weight for a healthier me!! Please feel free to add me as a friend for encouragement and support. It can be done!
  • cardio, cardio, cardio will help this. even more than weight loss itself.

Sherry: You can do this with the support of Myfitnesspal! My husband and I are using WW for diet and TOPS for support. We are having a lot of success. I would recommend both programs. s

I'm right there with you on the High Blood Pressure issue. My dad, mom, and just within the past few weeks, my brother, are all on BP medication. Plus, my dad is diabetic. For years, I always had fairly low blood pressure, even while I was overweight. But, with the stress of my job and increasing weight gain and just life in general, I had been in the pre-hypertension stage for several months. I'm happy to say that after two months of using MFP, my BP was in the normal range for the first time in a long time today. I'm sure you can do the same. :)

As someone who pulled back from the brink of Diabetes... let me tell you that yes it can be done. I used to weigh over 320 and am now 232 with normal levels across the board. My doctor says I have the heart of a 20 year old.

Follow the plan, get exercise and allow it all to come together and it can work for you.

If you need moral support or coaching, I'd be happy to help. Feel free to add me.

Just remember it is in you to change your future!

    You CAN DO IT!
