My husband works night so usually I cook his meat and potatos and put it in the tupper ware, then get myself something lighter. But, he has recently been getting weeks off every once in a while. I love to get to actually have dinner with him since it is a rare occation, but i tend to eat what he eats so that I am not making two meals. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I cook one meal at our house and everybody eats, if hubby is going to be gone I save left overs for him. We eat lots of soups and stir frys, or grilled meat and veggies.

Eat meat and potatoes. What in the world is wrong with that? Just measure it. Add some veggies to it, make a pot roast...mmmmm.

When I do cook for the family I will eat the same thing as them I might add a extra veg or a salad to what we are eating and i will eat just a smaller portion than anyone else. It helps to know that I don't have to cook something different for me and I am not giving up my favorite things either.

He eats nothing green! Really no veggies at all! I guess I will just have to cook the veggies for me. We have different goals he is trying to gain and I am trying to lost!

Just think...I also have 3 little kids who are very picky eaters like their father...I cook a lot of different meals here for everyone but always make double so that the next night I just reheat the food and don't have to cook again. Generally my kids eat one thing, my husband and I another meal but if he is having pasta or something with too many calories then I will also cook myself something lighter. It's just for now until I lose my weight.
I'm jealous that your husband gets to gain weight!!!
  • Wow! My husband doesn't eat greens either!!! It's very frustrating. Surprisingly I've found that he will actually eat them when they're made in stews, like made-up/homemade crockpot meals. He can pick 'em out if he doesn't want 'em. More for me!!! You can still eat the meat 'n potatoes, keeping in mind portion control.

I honestly get irritated when people cook separate meals for family members. He's a grown-*kitten* man, if he doesn't want to eat what's there....well tough cookies. If the kids don't like it, too bad....go hungry.

OK, so I guess that wasn't really very helpful, and I apologize. But these questions drive me bonkers...:grumble:

So glad you said it. I don't care if kids or hubby is pick. 1 family 1 meal. If you make your kids and hubby taste it eventually they will eat it. I don't put up with the whining or gaging. My kids have to sit till the take one bite of everything. If they whine I tell them I don't hear whining and I will listen to the when their voice is calm like mine. Then when they calm down and tell me they don't like it. I tell them that I'm so sorry, but everybody in the house has to taste everything, and if they want to go play all they have to do is take a bite and eat it and they can be done. I don't believe in babying them. Your not doing them any favors.

For the hubby that needs to gain. Give him a protein shake mixed with a little PB for a snack during the day.

I have the same problem with my boyfriend. He is a football player and has intense practices 5 days a week. I have trouble finding something that will give him enough energy and still have not too many calories for me. I tend to give him double the serving that I am having. If he isn't full then he just has snack food and if im not i just eat salad or warm up frozen veggies. Luckily he does eat veggies so i don't have to worry about that, but he is very picky. He also tends to go towards packaged pasta (kraft dinner and hamburger helper) I hate these so i have to make two meals.. so much for convenience.

    Ditto and Ditto.
I am busy enough without thinking about making multiple meals. If you don't start catering to each person's individual tastes, then they won't expect it. I have a husband and two active teenage boys - we rarely - eat dinner together so whoever is home and hungry is in charge of cooking. If the others don't like it....they can find something else to eat or go hungry.
