Does anyone climb stairs for exercise?

I mean beyond the scope of what is required by daily activities... I just had a workout and I was 100 calories short of my burn goal. So, I decided to go up and down my flight of stairs in my home 10 times and see what happened. I made my goal with that little stair climbing. My HRM increased quickly - and I wondered if stair climbing could be something I could develop an interval routine with? Possibly in between arm work, I could climb stairs. Does anyone else do this type of thing?

Also, since climbing stairs is such work on the leg muscles, could that be considered "resistance" training for the legs?

I make an effort to take the stairs all day at work at least 3 days a week. It is an awesome workout for the bum!
  • I climb stairs at work sometimes on my breaks. My department is on the 3rd floor, so I jog down to the 1st floor and run up them about 5 times in 10 mins. It's a great little workout. I usually burn quite a bit of calories in a short amount of time.

I have done it! lol: only because one day couldn't go for a run! I have an ap on my phone called Cardiotrainer, this has a lots of training exercices one can do including climbing stair, I logged onto that and just keep climbing up and down my stairs for 40 minutes or so, yes, great calories burn! although found it boring! lol:

I'm taking a fitness class called Stairs and Stability. We do a 5-4-3-2-1 set where we run up and down the stairs 5 times then we do a different core or balance oriented exercise, like crunches on a swiss ball etc. Then we run up and down the stairs 4 times and do another exercise. I scorch 300 calories in 45 minutes and I weigh 125. Its a great work out.

I love stairs as a work out! I'm a stay at home mom so it's just perfect but really I recommend them to everyone. It's free, gets your heart rate up and works your butt and legs, what more could you ask for! I'm currently doing the "100 pushups" challenge so I do them both together. I start with the first set of pushups then run up and down my stairs until I reach 10 flights, then I do another set of pushups and another 10 flights, etc. You get the idea. All in all, I end up doing 5 sets of the pushups challenge and 40 flights of stairs.

I work out with a personal trainer and he ALWAYS incorporates cardio in between strength training exercises. So, I will do arm exercises and in between each one I will do 3-5 stairs (walk down and sprint back up 3-5 times). Sometimes I do tire jumps in between or jumping jacks. It definitely gets my heart rate up and I typically burn about 500-600 calories in an hour session so I think it is a good idea. GOod luck!

Yes. Running up stairs is excellent. You get a greater range of movement than normal sprinting, and because it's a more intense work-out, you don't need to go so far to get the heart rate up. Anyone looking for high intensity / explosive lower body exercise should do it.
