I want to start working out first thing in the morning. Should I eat before I work out or after?

I usually split my breakfast in half, eating half before half after if I hit the gym in the AM.

I eat before, but I have to because I end up feeling really sick if I don't.

Something small is best. Complex carb and a protein.

Ex: 1/2 whole wheat english muffin and peanut butter

I can never work out as long if I'm due a meal, I need the energy so always eat first. You end up feeling faint and sick on the treadmill if you're hungry, and morning is the hungriest time of the day!

That said, does anyone find that they bloat after a morning work out??? I usually go to the gym in the evening, a couple of hours after tea and feel better for it in the morning, but if I go on a morning, I struggle to get my jeans back on that day :S Am I the only one facing this strange phenomenon??

I think different times of the day affect people differently and each person varies how they feel quite often. If I can workout early in the day, I feel energised throughout the whole day, but sometimes I run out of energy and know I didn't achieve half of what I could have if I was working out mid afternoon or later. Most people I know would prefer to workout first thing, because it easier to schedule successfully, though many don't actually do it.
  • I like a vanilla yogurt, and a special K bar to start my day off then about an hour later I will workout. Tried both eating and not eating before workout and I found a Light breakfast before my work out works the best for me. Listen to your body, good luck

i literally roll out of bed and exercise for 30 minutes first thing. i can't exercise immediately after eating because that makes me sick but i also can't eat then wait an hour because I have to get up so early as it is! I usually get up around 5:15, workout 30 minutes, shower, get dressed, and eat my breakfast in the car around 6:40 when I leave the house. But i do drink about 24 ounces of water before I even leave the house!

I never used to - but now that I'm doing really intense Am workout, I have a banana. I find it makes me have the energy to power through better then I did before.

I have exactly the same comment!

Every morning before breakfast I do an hour on the Stairmaster (45 min at an intensity is equivalent to ~8.8 mph, 15 min at an intensity equivalent to ~7.8 mph), and I eat a small banana (75 cal) ~ half an hour before I start exercising at ~6AM.

it really is different for everyone.

I used to get up at 5am and workout for 60 minutes. I always did it on an empty stomach. But the workout was always a struggle.

Previously I had done that too, and had observed the same thing -- that's why I tried eating a small banana half an hour beforehand to see how it would affect my energy level.

I was amazed at what a difference that made! The workout wasn't a struggle at all and I felt really strong the whole time. So ever since then, I've always eaten a small banana half an hour before my workout.

I was testing out a theory: working out after fasting (sleeping) means that you'll be burning reserves, which means quicker fat loss.

result: nahh it just made me b!tchy :explode:

Either take BCAA's prior to workout, or even a protein shake (whey).
Take a whey shake after, wait 30 minutes - chow down.
