If I'm in a situation where I can't weigh my food?

I was at a class session today and we had dinner in between and one of the things I had was potato kugel. I looked it up online and it's 300 calories for 5 oz. Question is, how do I know the difference between 5oz and 1oz? Like what does it look like so I know how much to put down? the potato kugel I had was like a square of it if , but a tall , thick one if that helps.

One ounce is a shot glass full. Same as two tablespoons.
  • Usually the size of a deck of cards is 4 ounces! Some things obviously are heavier than others but its a good way to judge!

I agree with the size of "deck of cards",or the palm of your hand.

Why don't you just weigh a raw potato of similar size to the potato kugel you ate. That'll give you a good estimate of the weight of the weight of the kugel you ate. It may be a little over, but that's better than underestimating your calories :)

You could work on it at home. Guess how much something weighs and then weigh it. I've gotten scarily good at eyeballing something correctly because I weigh everything at home!

Sounds like the amount you put down would be about right. You usually get 12 servings from an average 9x13 baking pan. So one serving would be 1/12 of the pan. If it was cut in a square then the single serving would be a bit small then the palm of your hand. It's hard to be exact because of the difference in volume of what you are eating. I follow the above general rule for serving size when I don't know exact ounces. I also will tend to guess high on the calories for the item.

I wish that were helpful, but I don't make kugel. I don't really know how to cook at all. I also don't know if the calorie amount for the kugel was at all accurate, because different websites say different things and there's only 2 listings for kugel on here.
