Anybody ever try Chia Seeds?

So I bought a pound of Chia seeds from my very favorite hippy website- RawFoodWorld.com, and have been experimenting....They say Chia Seeds are incredibly nutritious and basically magical, and not just for growing "hair" on those clay animal pots. Chia seeds are a soluable fiber and when hydrated can hold up to 12X their weight in water, which turns the seeds into a gel-like substance, that's the way to eat them from what I've read. I also read that they aid in weight loss so you know I had to get my hands on some. What I do is blend 2Tbs in the blender, turning them into a powder so they can be digested even better, then I blended a little coconut, apple and strawberry and about 1 cup water, then added the seed powder and blended a lil more. Not bad, you dont taste any chia gel, just the things you add. You can simply put 2Tbs. of seed in any liquid (applejuice would be yummo) and in 10 minutes the gel's there and it keeps up to 3 wks in the fridge. I suggest reading up on them online, way too much for me to get into here. But here's a good chunk I copied and pasted for you if your too busy to surf the web:
The gel that is formed in the stomach creates a physical barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, thus slowing the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar.
In addition to the obvious benefits for diabetics, this slowing in the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar offers the ability for creating endurance. Carbohydrates are the fuel for energy in our bodies. Prolonging their conversion into sugar stabilizes metabolic changes, diminishing the surges of highs and lows creating a longer duration in their fueling effects.
WOW!! check em and eat em and keep motivated MFP pals!

you could accomplish the same thing with 1 tablespoon of metamucil. As far as the chia seed gel creating a physical barrier. Thats completely false and not even an accurate description of how the digestive system works.
Its fiber thats all. Soluble and Non Soluble fiber slow down your bodys GI response to carbs. Protein does the same thing.
Most common metamucil type supplements are psyllium husk which contains both fiber types.
Soluble fiber slows down GI in your stomach, but they don't have bulk forming properties like a laxative fiber.
Non Soluble fiber is fiber your body can't digest. It's used to slow GI down as well as create natural bulk to make you go...you know..
To each their own. its just some information for you. If all you are concerned about is the result, there is a much more widely mass produced, better tasting, and cheaper option......and you'll be more regular for sure...0 -
My mother-in-law did this a few months ago. It was so weird because when they were soaked and ready to drink they looked like frog eggs, LOL. We, she included, joked about drinking her frog eggs. She didn't loose any weight doing this. I'm sure they are good for you. Chia seeds have their health benefits but as far as weight loss I don't think they do that unless you are adding it to your good eating habits and exercise.0

They are completely amazing, gives me so much stamina. I put 1 tbs in my smoothie after a run though some say do it before a run. Anyway you don't have to mess with grinding them OR soaking them just put them into whatever. I sprinkle on salad too. But they say do not go over 2 tbs a day and 1 is plenty.0
