I don't want to gain weight but instead need to lose about 15-20 pounds. I know carbs are an important part of eating right but I find myself fearful of eating certain things. Can anyone point me in the right direction on proper eating and nutrition? I want to train for a half marathon that will be held this fall and I want to do it the right way with healthy eating and exercise!

If you are training for a half marathon, you will need to get over your fear of carbs, or you won't be able to effectively train your body or have the amount of energy required to complete your half marathon. Maybe a visit to a dietician to review your special needs would be helpful.

Additionally, remember you can get a lot of your carbs from vegetables. Dietary fiber is another important feature of carbs. I find I can fill my day with produce, and haven't eaten rice, potatoes, or pasta in over a month.
  • Maybe buy the book 4 months to a four hour marathon..
I read it.. Good help and tips in this book

Fear soda, and sugar. Do not fear complex carbs, especially if you are wanting to run a marathon. Eat a lot of whole grains.

Avoid bleached white flour, sugar, HFCS.

    Good luck!

I agree, a dietician would be a good start. Carbs are important when you need energy. Athletes need much more carbs than others do so I'd be fearful of carb cutting...

I can completely relate to your fear! I am feeling the same way...I have lost 18 pounds, and have about 15 more to go. I am completely paranoid about carbs, eating out, and basically being creative in any way with my eating plan. I too, have an exercise goal of participating in a triathalon relay. (I'll be doing the swimming portion). There is a great website that provides meal plans with recipes that basically recommends eating about 1500 calories a day. (which is what I've been eating to lose weight so far). The nice part is, they do have bread, pasta and other choices, mostly whole grain. CNN has been highlight tips for nutrition, workouts and overall weight loss. Although it is geared towards triathalon training, there are so many good benefits even if you are just planning a 5k! I hope this helps! http://triathlon.competitor.com/category/nutrition

    best of luck!
  • Stick to the right kind of carbs like veges and whole grains. Avoid white stuff like potatoes, pasta, rice and instead each brown rice, sweet potatoes, and whole grain pasta. Avoid the really bad carbs that come in the form of processed icky sugar such is in candy, soda, desserts, etc.. :drinker: Cheers to you for wanting to run a marathon!
