I've heard a lot of people say that running is really good for trimming your waist and butt. I'm wondering is it the actual motion of running, is it the calories burned, what is it that is bringing these great benefits?

Thanks:flowerforyou:

    Yes

Pretty much all of the above. It tones the muscles in the quads, abs, calves, glutes, lower back, etc. Plus the high calorie burn helps get rid of fat.

I don't have any answers for you...I've always gotten my cardio thru kickboxing, dancing and circuit training. I've just started running..well more like jogging lol and want to see what responses you get!

It has made a HUGE difference in my hips. I've never had slim hips before, even as a skinny teen, my hips were wide.

I think it is the calorie burn. You burn a lot in a short time, so if you go for a long time you really burn!!

Totally my opinion. I have no technical knowledge.

For me it is emotional, I have not been able to run since I was teen, To take this up, gives me a since of accomplishment. Knowing that I am healthy enough to run, gives me strength to keep going towards my goal.

I have noticed since I started running that my core strength and tone has improved incredibly! I can actually tell there are muscles under there (the fat)!! And yes, it does work the legs-quads, glutes, etc.

I wish I could tell you the answer, but all I can say is from my personal experience it has worked. I didn't measure when I first started but have been running for 7 weeks now. In 2 weeks time I lost 1/2 inch off both my stomach and hips. I haven't noticed inches in my legs but they are definitely more muscular and can feel the muscles in my stomach getting tighter.

The lbs haven't come off as quickly as I would like, so it's nice to see physical changes.

There's got to be a reason why they are always running on Biggest Loser. They get those contestants running from the start and end with a marathon.

It's a good calorie burn and lower body toning. However, for me, running makes me very hungry and I really have to watch that I don't eat more calories than I burned when I get home from my run.

I lost inches and went down to 108lbs while training for the marathon I ran 7 months ago. And now since I stoped running due to winter ice and snow and pure laziness. I put on 7 lbs and flab since the run. I am now running again and feel great. I wish I lived in a country where there was no snow!!! LOL
Running is very relaxing and calming too!
    Good Luck

I think there are two forces in play with running.

Primarily, running burns more calories per hour than almost any other activity. You can get most of the benefits of running by walking, but it will just take a lot more time to do the same amount of work.

Calories burned will cause fat to be consumed and reduced on your body - not from any particular area, but from your overall fat stores. Since men's fat stores are noticeable around their middle, they tend to remark about waist reduction, even though fat will be coming off their neck, arms, hips and legs as well. Women tend to store more fat around their hips and thighs, but will actually be reducing ALL their fat stores proportionately.

Secondarily, running will significantly improve the muscles under those fat stores - particularly the abs, glutes and quads - and calves. So while the layers of fat are getting thinner, the muscles underneath are toning and reshaping themselves for the additional work being required of them. A win-win!

    Hope this helps, Dave
