Ok kids here it is... I worked out very hard today. I was wondering if you'd recommend drinking a protein shake before bed to fulfill some of my desperate protein needs and help with soreness? Oh yeah and all I have is whey protein with glucosmine or something like that in it. :)

Ok let's hear it.... What would you do.

I'd say go for it...your body needs the protein! Protein will keep you more full, also. I've had trainers recommend drinking a protein shake within 30 minutes of a workout, as well, for muscle repair purposes.

I think it may be a good idea Beth. I usually finish out my nights with peanuts because they keep me fuller, longer, and I don't wake up starved. Tonight I am actually having some peanut butter on some mini bagels but I never thought of having a protein shake myself. That would probably be good to help with those muscles, but again, the being hungry thing. You burned a ton of calories today and if you have a lot left you may wake up hungry if you don't have some protein.

yes, but ideally your whey is taken 30 minutes or less after your workout. this will get nutrients to your muscles while they are starved for it. that said, anytime is good for some protein

if youre worried about muscle soreness and recovery then the absolute best time to have a protein shake is within 1 hour after working out. you also need to replenish carbs during this hour so its a good idea to throw some fruit into the shake. maybe a banana. there is a 1 hour window here when your body is depleted of glycogen from your workout and drinking protein and carbs replenishes it and allows your muscles better recovery.

regarding having 1 before bed i would say only have a protein shake before bed if you are trying to add mass. if youre trying to lose weight then try not to eat anything at all at least 2 hours before you go to bed.

if you must eat something right before bed then protein is your best bet because your body burns more calories breaking down protein

I did drink one already today and added banana. I am just low on protein and I'm working out extra hard and was thinking so I wasn't famished when I woke, and also to help repair. I know I should drink within 30 min. but I was thinking I'd add an extra to meet some needs. :) Wanted everyone's input...The stuff online is mixed.

before bed try a slow-digesting protein source such as casein. dairy such as yogurts and cottage cheese would be a good idea. Casein powders are also available.
