I need to vent, my sister-in-law and I both have been losing weight since the new year. She has been on a diet program and I have been doing it through MFP. On the weekend it was my dad's birthday so the family all got together for dinner so we were seeing my sister-in-law for the first time in about a month and you can see she has lost weight. When I was talking to my sister today she proceeds to tell me that she had a salad for lunch, yesterday, today and probably tomorrow because my sister-in-law looked so good on the weekend that it has motivated my sister to start taking care of herself. I was like ummmmmm what?? I know that I have a lot to lose and maybe 30 pounds do not show up on me much, but really she can't give me credit for what I have done to date? Maybe it is just me and I am being sensitive, I guess I am just used to her not complimenting me and giving me any encouragement and this just drove me over the edge
Ok whiny vent is over now!

I understand you completely. It felt like a kick in the face. Here you are actively losing weight, eating healthier and she wants to make a change because she saw someone else doing it BLAH!! Girl use it as fuel!! Fill up your tank and drive forward! Those salads for lunch probably won't last long anyways. *sucker punch for ya*0

I totally understand. I've lost 30 pounds since Jan. 4 and I'm thinking it should be noticeable...my guess is that people who see you down a pound here, a pound there...for all those 30 lbs don't see it. You are doing great! Don't sweat it...0

You KNOW those salads won't last long! She'll get tired of them and go back to eating what she was. YOU are doing this the healthy way and it will be a change you can live with, not some fad or rabbit food all the time. I know what that feels like when you're working hard and the family (for me, my Mom and sis) hardly notices or doesn't say a danged thing!!!! Grrrr! Give it a good scream to clear the frustration--I suggest screaming into a pillow or go in the closet and scream and move on. This is about YOU, not what they think.0

Is your sister someone you see weekly or every two weeks? If you haven't seen your sister-in-law in a few months, the change will "appear" more dramatic, even if in reality its not. Go find someone you haven't seen in a couple of months and WOW them. Or for your family, wear some baggy clothes around them for a few weeks and then break out that rad body when the weather is really warm. You are doing great! Don't let anyone discourage you. And while your sister is eating just salads for lunch, you've learned that you can eat yummy protein and such and still lose weight0

But you will be the one that succeeds; whereas your sister-in-law and sister will get fed up with eating salads everyday for the rest of their life.

Don't let that discourage the weight loss that you have already acomplished. I find that the people that you are around the most are the last to notice any changes unless you come in to work with your head shaved. Keep up the good work and remember this is about you feeling better. Your doing great so give yourself a good pat on the back.0

If you see your sister often, it is very likely she has just not noticed. It took a long time for people I work with to notice, but when I run in to friends I have not seen in a while, they definitely comment. Kind of like seeing a toddler every day vs every 3 months. If you only them sporadically, the next time they look like they have grown so much, but day-to-day it is hard to notice the change.
EDIT: What lulabellewoowoo said. (I'm too slow...)0 -
No one noticed my loss but I only loss 15 so far. Don't let it bother you too much. Does you sister see you often? Its hard to see changes in people if they are changing before your eyes, but if you go a while without seeing them its more obvious.
Also to Disirai I can't see the weight amounts but awesome changes you have made!0 -
OOOO yes..I've lost almost 40lbs and people don't notice. I mean I know I'm a big girl and all...I"ve been doing this since January and yes 4 months of hard work you would think someone would notice..but you know what?!? I notice! I just had a pity party cause nobody noticed my weight loss and then I started thinking about how I notice what I have done..I'm doing this for me and my health. Trust me the time will come and your going to have that WOW moment from everyone..:) And then everyone is going to try to eat salads for lunch..(which we know sometimes salads can be WAY worse then a burger). Keep your head up girly, your doing great!0

I am older, so my experience tells me that is was probably no accident that your sister more or less made the comparison. Know you got it out of your system, but if not, use the adreniline rush of angry to burn even more calories!!!! Here at MFP, we rock!!!!0

Thanks everyone for your comments and support, it is much appreciated, it has just burned a fire under my butt and I had a good workout tonight *LOL*0

That kind of thing does make me angry! My mother used to be the worst! I'd be really trying and she'd start talking about how fat I am. (She wasn't one to mince words). Of, course, there's another thing to take into account. Once, when I saw my cousin who is 4'11" tall she REALLY looked different. She said she lost 30 lbs. Well, I'm a lot taller than that. Actually, 30 lbs. on me doesn't make nearly the same difference. I think I'd have to lose about 50 lbs. for it to be noticed in the same way. I'd think 30 lbs. would be noticed, it just wouldn't make the same difference.0
