Hi, I am not new here. I started in early January this year. 3 weeks after I started tracking my calories I found out I was pregnant. I stopped tracking my calories as soon as I found out. Now that I am out of my first trimester I have been feeling hungry and making poor food choices and gained 5 pounds. I know I am supposed to gain weight but I want to hold myself accountable by tracking my calories and not mindlessly eat. How many calories should I eat? I am 5ft 4in and weigh 149. I am worried about gaining more than the recommended 25-30 pounds.

Ask your doctor, I know the answer changes with whatever trimester you're in. I want to say in the first trimester it's whatever it takes you to maintain your weight plus 200 calories, don't quote me on that, though!!
  • I've heard that in the last trimester you only need an extra 200 calories a day. Don't hold me to this seeing as your best bet would be to talk with your doctor.

Here's the link to the pregnancy forum on MFP. It's a bunch of great ladies, a very active board and a lot of fun!!! Feel free to drop in and check it out.

First of all congratulations! I've two wee men and they are the best thing ever - when I was pregnant the class I attended on my first said - that you should only be eating about 200 extra calories a day in the first 2 trimesters and these should really be calcium loaded so that would be a glass of milk say. Congratulations again. P.S there is an Irish website with really good discussion boards for mums to be called rollercoaster.ie its worth checking out D.

I think you only need extra calories in last trimester, so for now aim for number of calories that would be for weight maintenance and not loss. I know from personal experience that very easier to gain lots of unnecessary weight in pregnancy. But listen to your body if you are hungry eat, but make good food choices...

Still log your calories but change your goals to maintain. In the 1st trimester you need no extra calories, in the 2nd trimester you need 200-300 extra calories and in the 3rd trimester you need 300-500 extra calories. As you can see you dont get many more calories so its important to choose how to eat them wisely.

    Congratulations!

I am 8 weeks pregnant and what my doc told me is that i should eat what i usually eat (my maintenance around 1700-2000 cal since i am active) and a glass of milk. I am eating this and i am gaining the amount of weight that i need to gain. But talk to your doc first.
