Swim your way to health?

Hey guys!

I'm from Southern California and I've been a swimmer all my life, and up until the last year and a half I was also really healthy. Now I live in wet and rainy Washington State and since my new gym has a pool, I thought it was time to get back in the water!

Has anyone had much success with swimming as a form of exercise? I was always on swim teams throughout school but we just focused on speed and did most of our workouts out of the water. Now I'll be in a lap pool and I'm going to try to focus on swimming as a way for me to still be working out while I'm on my "rest days," meaning days when I'm not heavily running.

Any experiences, tips, routines, etc. are greatly appreciated! Thanks. :)

I am also looking at getting back into swimming as my main exercise. I recently joined a gym with a pool.
I, like you, used to be on the swim team and swam laps non stop for 1-2hrs/ day 3-4 days a week.
It is fantastic cardio and resistance training.

Swimming is great exercise! You can get workout plans on www.swimplan.com or you can buy the swim cards from www.fitdeck.com if you don't want to write your own workouts

I second the masters team idea. I joined the team here in January. I used to do my own swim workouts, but having the coaches has been great, and they push me more than I would push myself. They can also tailor a workout for whatever your goals are. It has helped with my weight loss and has also helped with my running endurance.

Thanks all! I'm definitely going to try out the workout swimplan created for me, and look into masters too!

What she said! I adore my masters swim team - couldn't push myself half as hard if not for my coach and team mates. I, like you, grew up in SoCal and swam on the swim team. I still swim today and love it - it's my main form of exercise.
