Red wine anyone?

I've read that our bodies metabolize alcohol and 'food' differently. That alcohol is turned directly into fat. Does anyone have any information on the subject? I factor in red wine with my calorie count at dinner -- max 300ml. Please don't tell me to ditch the wine, because it ain't gonna happen. What I want to know is if red wine will hinder my progress for some strange metabolic reason. I really thought everything was just a matter of calories in vs. calories out.:blushing:

I have heard a lot of good things about red wine, but I'm not sure about this one.0

Hi there
I must admit I love my red wine too especially over the weekends. Red wine is very good for you (anti-oxidents etc.) as far as I know, but when it comes to loosing weight, the sugar in the red wine might be a problem . As well as the fact that alcohol consumption deters weight loss (fat burning) for up to 72hours.
I try to limit my alcohol intake to weekends only (not always easy though)
Good luck0 -
Up to 72 hours?! Geez, I live in Italy for goodness sakes and here in Puglia is where they produce some of the best! Wine, especially red, at meals is a cultural staple. Gotta see what I can do, but it all sounds a bit depressing:ohwell:0

There seems to be some controversy with the question: Is Alcohol processed like sugar or does it turn into fat? I have found some online resources that might interest you, I've included their links below. I thought the educational ones were pretty informative.
Most diet programs agree you should avoid alcohol for a minimum of two weeks. I reward myself with 3 to 6 oz. red-wine when I reach a goal. I have avoided regularly having wine with dinner, and it seems to have helped. Probably because drinking makes me hungry and less inhibited, therefore less likely to avoid poor food choices.

Rejoice! Red wine actually aids in weight loss - according to this article in the American Journal of Physiology one of the ingredients in red wine has an insulin like effect that can have weight loss effects.
American Journal of Physiology: Endocrinology & Metabolism; Jun2006, Vol. 53 Issue 6, pE1339-E1346,
My dad is a diabetic with minor stomach problems - his doctor told him to drink a glass or two at supper each night. As long as you're not guzzling the stuff, then you're probably fine.0 -
its just calories. if youve got them spare, then a glass or two isnt going to make you fat0
