I've already mostly made up my mind about this, but I thought it would be entertaining to hear what you all think of MSG - Mono Sodium Glutemate.

I've read a lot about it and it seems like its kind of turned into a scapegoat, especially for the overweight. I even read a mom blogging about how its the entire reason her family is obese. Which I think sounds like there are a number of variables that she is ignoring. Which would be a really sad situation if she's misleading children.

A common thread that I see in research is that due to its neural effects it can stimulate something in your brain that regulates hunger. It can be stimulated to the point of becoming unbalanced and when the effects wear off you become hungry again, sooner than you would if you hadn't eaten it at all. People seem to think it causes obesity, diabetes, warts, wrinkles, bad luck. Do you guys avoid it too?

I am not certain that there are any definitive studies that support much of anything related to health concerns, there is certainly a lot of anecdotal information out there. MSG is a salt of Glutamic acid which is actually a neuro-transmitter in your brain. Last I heard any empirical study regarding the possible effect on the brain was still ongoing. That being said, since cutting out msg from my diet which usually coincides with reducing sodium intake and eating whole foods. When i have something with MSG in it i definitely feel unwell. Like that bottomless feeling and then headaches and body aches. However that is just me. and could be a generalization of the type of food that uses MSG as a flavoring.
