I have no idea, but they sound like fun! And if it's fun, you'll do it more...Interested to find out.

I think they can help with toning but make sure you buy a good one. The one I bought comes apart very easily but I do think if you bought a better brand it would provide a great workout.

I think they're a great workout, definitely...but I bought one and had to return it because I got such bruises! I had read reviews that said to expect bruising and pain at first, but that you would get used to it. I could not get used to it :)

Hooping in general is awesome for toning up the mid section, not to mention legs/butt/arms also.
If you are just starting out, a weighted hoop is recommended. You will also need on that reaches to at least your belly button when you are standing up. The bigger and heavier the hoop the easier it is to get it working.
If you are interested in hooping check out this website: hooping.org Its amazing!

<---hoop dancer here. I usually tell people to get a "normal" hoop or make their own. Don't get the walmart kiddie ones as they are a waste of time. Straight out waist hooping will get your heart rate up and make you sweat in a great way!! The class I teach is up to 10 minutes endurance and they love/hate every minute of it. Toss the dance part onto it and they have a few choice things to say to me. ;D

Here's a great site that explains how to build your own hoops http://www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html. Then you can make them as heavy or as light as you want to! There are tons of vids if you want to learn the different tricks. Otherwise just grab your hoop and "chill" in front of the tv for a half hour!!

Mmmmm Id be more inclined to get a regular hoop (not a kids one) because you will be able to do more with it but still get the same effects.
Try googling "How to hula hoop" to see what you could do with a hoop.

I have a friend who does tons of hooping. He has a collapsible one he carries to various parts of the world. The last I heard, he hooped on top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. He also has a cool lighted hoop.

This one is wild. It's a good idea, especially if it tones the middle.

Where can you find "regular" hoola hoops? I don't want to make one.

When I looked up the videos to post above, I found that the advert next to the vid offered a variety of hoops and vendors. I didn't follow the link though so have no idea what you'll find.

There are sellers on the hooping.org site if you are interested in buying one. Im not sure what they are like though as I get mine from a shop in Melbourne (Australia).
There is a forum on their website so you could pick some brains about where is best to buy from.

Hoopnotica.com, hoopgirl.com or my superduper favorite Superhooper.org are all reputable sellers. I got my fire and LED hoops through Lara (Superhooper) as well. I don't know if she still has it but on the fancier ones, you can get lay away. She's also super sweet to talk to and can help you pick out what's best for your goals.

Welcome to your new addiction!! :D
