Guys, how important is it to set mini-goals? I have a big goal of losing 40 lbs. but I don't really have any mile-markers laid out... Will that make it go faster??

not faster so much as it will help you. for me, I won't go out to eat until i'm below 175. I won't schedule my engagement photo session until 150..
things to look forward to and you can even do little rewards like mani/pedi, shoes, getting your hair done, facial, massage... etc0 -
I love having mini-goals. Feeling like you've accomplished something just encourages you to do more and reach the next one! Also, I think I might start adding rewards to mine... especially for when I hit Onederland! If I think about having to lose 50 more lbs and that's my finish line, I get depressed. But when I think oh hey, in 5 more lbs I'll be in Onederland and past my first goal- I get SO excited!0

Hang up a pair of pants that you want to fit into. I put it on the back of my bedroom door so it's a visual goal for me!! When I can fit into those pants I'll know that I'm doing GREAT with this program!0

I don't know if it makes it go faster. I wanted to lose 53 pounds. It just seemed so overwhelming to think about 53 pounds!!! And I knew that I wanted to look significantly different when my husband comes home in August. So I sat down and wrote out mini-goals along the way to help me achieve my timeline. They're all attainable and realistic timelines. 10-15 pounds here and there is just a little easier to grasp I think. :-)0

I work better with mini goals.
Even if its just to get a faster mile time, lift a few more pounds, or eat right for a whole week.
I always like to work towards something.0 -
I love mini goals b/c it helps me keep my eye on teh price with out thinks "crap i still have over 60lbs to lose" but I started out with amlmost 100 to lose. I use specail dates to set my goals. mini goals help me push through plateaus too.I have only set half of mine thogh and plan to add the reast a little later. Good luck reguardless of whtt you choose.0

Setting mini goals is important (I think). It makes you focus on something other than the overwhelming task ahead of you, such as losing 40 pounds, or 100 or what ever. If you look at it as I have to lose 10 lbs by such date, thats alot easier to swallow than thinking 40 lbs. and if you set dates for you goals then u may say I want to lose 40 lbs in 6 months (or whatever) so you may think, "oh well, I still have 5 months left, or I still have 4 months left...." and you make excuses. If you set mini goals (I am going to lose 10 lbs in 6 weeks) thats alot less escuse making because after 2 weeks have passed, you should be 1/3 of the way to your goal. Does this make sense?
I am a teacher (math not english) but when I was in school and we had to write a research paper, I HATED that they would make us turn in an outline on this date, and a rough draft by this date and a second rough draft..... Even though the paper wasnt due for 2 months. Well most people are procrastinators, and if you don't have those mini goals, you will wait until the week before your paper is due to start working on it!!! So now I understand that having an outline and several rough draft ended up really helping me, because when I had to write my final draft, it was really easy!!!! Thats what I think this is similar to.
Setting minigoals in EVERYTHING can be very helpful, and that includes weight loss!0 -

Good point, I was always the one writing a paper at the last minute at school! I definitely don't want to have to lose 40 lbs at the last minute.0 -
This might sound cheesy, but I have a bracelet that I add bobbles to for every 10lbs I lose. It's a constant reminder of how far I've come (or how far I have to go since there's only 3 so far).
I'm trying to make them each reflect something I'm doing or feeling at the time. So far I've got a 4-leaf clover (it was near St. Patty's day), my zodiac sign to remember my best attributes (I am a true Capricorn- Practical and prudent; Ambitious and disciplined; Patient and careful; Humorous and reserved- except for the "patient" part), and a stiletto for a less self-conscious Girls' Night Out.0 -
I don't have mini goals that I have published but each week I layout my plan and what I hope to get out of it. So this week I just wanted to stay within my calories, get a workout in 5 days and not gain. (I was on a 4 day 5 city trip with my boss! Ouch) And I did it. I actually lost a pound. If I had no plan for the week, I might have fallen.0

Wow good job! I'm kind of going day by day at the moment but I'm sure that's probably not the best way...0 -
Thanks for posting this topic and thanks to everyone who responded. It is good food for thought. I haven't set mini goals. I'll need to think about this.0
