how accurate do you all think these things are? I just bought one & walked about a mile and a half with a weighted vest & it told me I burned over 400 cal. I did my heart rate frequently as they said it would give a more accurate reading. Just seems high to me. your thoughts on this?

From what I understand they are pretty accurate.

there are some brands which are better than others, usually the ones with a chest strap are more accurate. I prefer polar but sportline, and many other brands are good as well.

Thank you for sharing. That helps!
  • I recently purchased a Polar ft4 to help me track how many calories I am burning with my kinect workouts. Can't wait to test it out. Supposed to be really accurate.

Just an expansion on that, if it doesn't have a chest strap so it can monitor your heart rate constantly, it is pretty much useless for calorie calculation. It must be able to constantly follow the changes in your heart rate to be accurate in an manner in terms of calculating calories burned. The reason the non-chest strap ones have a calorie feature on them is that people want that and it sells HRMs. The number of calories burned is far from accurate though. It could be really high, could be really low, or could be close, but you never know.

I have a sportline with a chest strap and it seems fairly accurate based on comparison to other methods of estimating calories burned.

If you have a HRM, remember to update your weight setting in it frequently as that will really change the number of calories it will calculate.

I have a question about HRM's also and didn't want to reduntantly start another thread....

I am looking for an HRM belt that has bluetooth capabilities... I'm wanting to use it with my Endomondo app on my phone... Any suggestions?
  • i think the reason it was so high was because I did a work out before the walk & my heart rate was already elevated.
