I am new at the treadmill and the gym for that matter. I am afraid everytime I get off the darn thing and I just want to go home. If it is 10 minutes or 90 min it is always the same. I eat right! I drink plenty of water and get dizzy after I get off. I am fine the entire time I am on and I walk aprox 3.5 on a 4% incline, Not that hard but a workout for me. I have strong legs and I am 222 pounds! I have been working out for 3 weeks now? I am afraid and I don't want to stop. Any ideas?

before you get off the treadmill do you do a 5min cool down.0
-
do you eat before you exercise?0
-
Yes the gym where I go the machine already does that. It does an auto cool down when you press the button.0

Blood sugar drop when you excerise. I havwe insulin resistance so I just have juice before hand and drink a protien shake afterwards.0

Yes I eat every 2 hours all day! I feel like a pig but it is less cal (aprox 150-200 cal per meal) and 1 meal is about 300 cal.0

thats how I started off at first, I'd get dizzy and couldnt walk straight, but then I informed my Dr about it, he told me to slow down the speed for the first week, so the first week I was doing 2.5 then the second week I stared at 3.0 now i'am at 3.3 and its my third week, and soo used to it, still get my calories burned, or if that doesnt work for you, you might want to cool down for atleast 5 minutes after you stop walking..0

Rest days are important for this reason. Even a proper marathon training plan includes a rest day every other day.
Just take it easy, don't try to rush things.0 -
Maybe it could be motion sickness. Just a thought0

Phil is right...need rest days. Alternate your days. I do a hard day of cardio and alternate it with a day of combo of light cardio and weight training that gives you a workout in all major muscle groups.
Should talk to a fitness specialist at your gym about the dizziness and see if he/she can help you with an all around plan.0 -
This happens to me on the treadmill also. My mother warned me my first time to sit on the treadmill to regain my equilibrium. Something about being on a moving object and not actually moving causes this. Also, my mother has COPD and ONLY walks at a slow pace and she also has this, so I don't think speed is the issue. Some people told me it would get "better" after you get used to it. This is the exact reason I do my runs outside or not at all, I hate that "dizzy" feeling.0

I've had that happen to me recently and just put it up to vertigo, I get it from time to time when my ears are a bit "off" from sinus congestion. But, I think you should talk to your Doc about it just to be on the safe side. Just check it out...don't let it derail your great efforts, though!0

This happened to me too. My brother told me is a reaction of your mind. I used to fell very dizzy and I had to sit down after a workout. I was not even jogging. I was walking at 3.3 - 3.5.
Now I am jogging at 4 - 4.5 and don't have any problems. So give it a week or two and you will be okay. Trust me I used to freak out too. But keep up the good work.0 -
The treadmill made me feel really dizzy at first too, but it subsided the longer I used it. I also believe it's because we are on a moving object and it messes with our equilibrium. As for feeling weak and getting the shakes, that sounds like your sugar is bottoming out. I believe you are suppose to eat carbohydrates before exercise for this. Good carbs at that.0

I'm so glad I found this thread! Great advice everyone, I was having this problem too.0

This happens to me when I'm walking on the trail near my apartment. About 10 minutes in I'll start shaking so hard I feel like I'm going to fall over. I realized I needed to eat a small snack before walking, and bring something sugary with me, so I usually keep a date snack (mashed dates rolled in unsweetened coconut) in my pocket, and I'll eat tiny bits of it to keep my blood sugar from plummeting (not diabetic but insulin-resistant due to PCOS).0

do you also get dizzy if you change positions too quickly (ex. horizontal to vertical)? during a hot shower? especially first thing in the morning? it could be a sensitive vasovagal reflex.
some bodies are subject to post-exercise hypotension: when the blood vessels in the legs dilate, it can cause a large volume of blood to pool, leaving the heart with less blood to pump and the brain with less oxygen than is required to maintain consciousness. it's usually alleviated immediately by lying down, basically counteracting gravity so blood (and oxygen) returns to the heart and brain. i tend to experience tunnel vision and dizziness after prolonged standing or leg-based exercise. the frequency of my spells has been greatly alleviated by maintaining hydration (i drink lots of water and have been prescribed a high sodium diet) which, in turn, assists with keeping blood pressure above fainty levels.
if this sounds like a match your symptoms, google 'vasovagal syncope' or ask your doctor about all the things--i realize feeling like you're about to lose consciousness can cause panic and things to do with one's heart might sound scary/serious, but it's actually fairly common and not necessarily cause for alarm.

Do you have low blood sugar or low blood pressure? I've gotten that a few times and I have both low blood sugar and low blood pressure. It's an awful feeling.0

i actually get this from walking lunges. i jsut take a little sit down break and then im fine.0

You need to have a physical and get your blood pressure checked. Also get your ears looked at. This could be an inner ear equilibrium thing. If you have ever had something like encephalitis or West Nile Virus, that could also be a contributing factor.0

Also, there are exercise machines other than treadmills you can use. If the treadmill bothers you, try an exercise bike until your fitness improves. I'd guess that an elliptical is probably going to give you the same trouble. If you try other machines, and they give you the same trouble, you need to see a doctor.0

My guess is you're not eating enough to fuel your body for those workouts if you are in fact only eating 1200 calories per day. I can't tell since you're not logging food. That was happening to me when I was only eating 1200 calories and trying to run.
Also I agree with a doctor checkup, never hurts.0 -
I always agree with asking your doctor. Have you tried electrolyte drinks or just coconut water before you start or after you finish. If you have reduced your sodium as part of your healthy lifestyle it may be as simple as that. Good luck.0

This happens to me when I don't eat enough. Try to at least eat something before you get on!0

Treadmill does this to me too, especially when I walk or run at faster speeds. I'm fine while I'm going, even slowing down, but it will hit me when I stop. Elliptical, track and trail don't, I can really go at it and not have quite the same dizziness. I have to cool down to super slow mo for a long time before I stop. I tried sipping gatorade full strength during the workout with no help. It really hit home since don't get dizzy at all on track or trail. It has to do with the moving belt, I get car sick when not driving and can't go on carnival rides either. So now, when I go to the gym, I avoid the treadmill, and use the rubberized track instead, elliptical, even the bikes, before I move on to the weight machines, and pool. I gave my home treadmill away too.0
