Planning to be off-plan

I have read a few posts recently from people worried about going over calories and getting discouraged. I wanted to share something that I have been doing the past five weeks and still have lost 25 pounds: the plan to be off-plan. If you're like me at all, I have cravings for food....mostly carbs for me. So, instead of constantly fighting with the voice of the old me, I plan to eat one "off-plan" meal per week. Not an entire day, and not a celebratory gorging of myself. But a time when I can have a favorite meal, start to finish, with no guilt. For example, tonight, it's pizza and breadsticks and maybe even a beer. Yep. I'll go over my calores, carbs and fat intake. You betcha. But I've planned for it. I'm not eating from boredom or guilt or sadness or happiness. I'm planning a meal off-plan. Planning it just like most healthy people do, and making sure that I set myself up for success. How? I'll have less calories throughout the day so that it won't be such a big impact. I know the meal will be way higher in sodium than I'm used to, so I'll drink lots of extra water. I will walk an extra half-hour. I will plan to eat the meal late afternoon instead of evening to give my body a chance to recover before I go to bed. I am in total control....as opposed to just going crazy eating whatever I wanted because I slipped up and had something I "shouldn't have". And, most of all, I get right back on plan the next meal (usually for me the next day and I don't weigh myself for a few days. I don't want to see that water weight gain on the scale. And, you know what? I still lose weight. But most of all, I am teaching my mind and body that I am in control of food, not the other way around. Just thought I'd share.

  • Wow!! Great ideas! I used to do the celebratory gorging as a reward, and always felt sick and guilty after. This seems like it would really work.

I really like this and sometimes do something similar. Although I don't usually set up a specific meal to go "off-plan" I do just have fun when a situation comes up like dinner with my son and his wife or a staff luncheon at work. I also tend to average the "extra" into the course of a week instead of just the one day. It's not hard to adjust diet and exercise a bit for several days to accommodate the occasional spike here and there. And it allows you to have a bit of extra fun along the way =)

It is so great that you can do that. How to you prevent it from being a cycle of days that are over in calories?

I do the same kinds of things. Tomorrow I'm going to dinner at my sister's boyfriend's parent's house. I doubt that they'll have anything diet friendly, so today and tomorrow up until dinner I'm being extra focused. I'll be going for a nice long walk before I go to dinner and probably having really low fat high veggies/fruit breakfast and lunch.

I think you said it right it's all about being in control. This way you can make this a lifestyle instead of a "diet". I do similiar things because you have to enjoy yourself and can't be deprived all the time otherwise this won't work. Thanks for the post.

to the q: how do I prevent it from being a string of days instead of one (or something like that)? Well, diligence. And I find that if I plan for it, my mind is in the perfect place to do it. And I start planning for the next morning right away. I like the idea someone posted, too, of dividing the extra calories over the entire week to make up for them each day instead of gorging one day and starving the next. Balance is the key. I'm goin' Zen!
