I have a thyroid disorder and PCOS. I can't seem to lose even 1 pound i thought i did but i gained back 3 pounds. I just need some support and some advice. Maybe some friends with these disorders or anyone who can just offer advice and support. I am happily married to the man of my dreams. We are wanting to have a baby soon. But I have to lose the weight first for the sake of the baby and myself. So please i listen to anything you got.
Thanks Amanda

I have Hashimoto's Hypothyroid and SLE Chronic Lupus. Believe me, I KNOW what you are going through. I went from a size 2 to an 18 in four months after packing on 80 pounds in such a short time. In 5 years, I have managed to only lose 20 of those pounds. I'm starting the 30-Day Shred tomorrow, so I'm hoping that it helps. Even though I don't really know what to do that helps, just know that you aren't alone.

My sister has PCOS. To help get her cycle under control and to help her lose a few pounds, she asked her doctor if she could take metformin (I think that's the correct spelling.) Not only did she lose weight, but it regulated her enough that she became pregnant within 3 months of taking it without any other fertility assistance.

I had thyroid disorder after my second daughter. The dr was quick to prescribe meds, but after some discussion gave me some tome to try and fix this problem myself. Nothin like a health issue to kick start your weight loss journey. I did my research and stuck to my plan and when u went back to the Dr my test results came back normal. Whoop whoop! That was 8 years ago and ever since have been on thus path to a healthy life and havnt went back. Don't worry about the scale, just use it as a reference. We all retain between 3-5 lbs from day to day. Just keep active and eating clean and try nit to weigh yourself everyday its torture. Let ur snug jeans be the deciding fact when they get loose then weigh in.

Are you being properly medicated for the thyroid condition? I have hypothyroid and when I was much heavier I had PCOS. I don't have a more difficult time losing weight than anyone else when I'm properly medicated. The "cure" for PCOS is also in the weight loss, but the weight loss is difficult because of the PCOS, so I feel ya.

    Hey Amanda,

Just wanted to hop in and show a little support. I have PCOS as well, I would suggest talking to your doctor about low-carb eating. A common symptom of PCOS is insulin resistance, which can be really assisted by limiting carb intake. I don't mean putting yourself in ketosis, I mean approximately 60 - 100 carbs a day - you'll have your individual sweet spot. Since low-carb dieting can be termed 'risky' depending on your specific body's needs, I would def advise talking with your doctor about it first, but it has REALLY helped me. I spent a year and a half on MFP starting in 2008, i faithfully logged every day, worked out - and I dropped maybe 15lbs total eating less but 'normally' - meaning 150 - 220carbs/day. I know how discouraging it can be!

It may or may not work for you, but its an idea

Have you been tested for any gluten intolerance? There is a common connection with Celiac and Thyroid. This could cause you to have trouble losing weight. I followed Ann Louise Gittleman's Fat Flush plan which virtually cured my pcos because I was able to get healthy and balance my hormones.

    Hi Amanda,
Your story sounds like mine! I have both thyroid problems and PCOS. We also want to have a baby, which is much of the reason I'm losing weight. I know it can be so, so frustrating! You definitely aren't alone.

The Paleo Diet might be something you want to look in to.
It eliminates grains, legumes and dairy.

The focus is on lean meats, fish, poultry, vegetables, fruits, some nuts, healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, coconut oil.

I have thyroid cancer and have always had a problem with losing weight the conventional way incorporating so called "healthy" grains. It's never worked for me.

This way IS working for me.

    Good luck to you!
  • I too have PCOS. I can't help with the weight loss because I too am here for that reason but I can say that I had difficulty getting pregnant. I was heavy before I got pregnant and we tried for over a year with no results. My doctor put me on Metaformin (SP?) and I was pregnant 2 months later. They took me off of the metaformin when I got pregnant and I haven't been on it since. While pregnant I got gestational diabetes. I had a mild case that was treated with diet but it was hard to diet while pregnant!! Anyhow I have a healthy and beautiful daughter but I'm still fat. I have to agree with everyone else its hard for me but we have to limit the carbs and sugar and balance in protein. The dietician I saw when pregnant told me not to eat things that had more than 15 carbs per serving. They also had me eat much like I'm eating now 3 meals with two or three snacks. Life is hard when you love carbs!!! Good luck though, you can do it.

The endocrinologist treating me for my thyroid started me off with Phentermine (not to be confused with Phen-Fen). I lost a lot of weight that way (because, like you I had already begun changing my eating habits and being active) and have kept most of it off for years now without having to return to using the pills since then. He said it was just to get things going. But I live in south Florida and they seem to medicate for everything. I don't know how you feel about pills, but if you're seeing an endo, talk with him about the PCOS. Mine looked at my chart the other day and suggested Metformin until he realized I don't want anymore children.
