What's the best and worst advice you've been given??

about losing weight and being healthy?
My best = don't give up
worst= my mum told me to skip meals as that's how she did it! personally I could not do that and thefact she's always aneamic (sp?) shows its not healthy.

The best: Don't keep crappy food in your house. If its not there, you can't eat it.
The worst: Eat a tapeworm. (seriously)

Best = never focus on the big loss, break it down into manageable realisitic chunks
- from my GP who is also female and overweight hence why I feel I can talk to her about my weight problems
Worst = solid food makes you fat - liquid food makes you thin

Aye, if you dont buy it you cant eat it - that works
i too head that a tape worm would be good as it digests food for you - but i dont fancy a 19metre long worm in my gut0 -

worst: okay, this is complicated, but I think most personal trainers have done me more harm than good by pushing me so much that I never wanted to go back. This is a common "worst", I think. I have lost 20 pounds over the last 2 years all by myself with no one telling me "walking three times a week won't get you results!". In fact, walking led to boxing which led to running which led to Insanity but it took awhile.

Best advice: Lose 10% of my body weight to reduce my chance of getting diabetes by 50%..
Worse advice: A personal trainer once said about food.... only eat it if it comes out of the ground, grows on a tree or runs, flies or swims.....needless to say this meant no carbs and it made me feel ill.0 -

I have heard almost the exact same bad advice from four or five different people, and only the details were different. This unsolicited advice was offered after I've already lost considerable weight using MFP.0 -
Best: keep a food log (this has been the single most important factor in my weight loss ... well, other than not giving up)
Worst: My mom told me to eat less than 1000 calories a day because that's how she lost 50 lbs in 5 months. I did it for about 3 weeks until I had so little energy I could barely stand up at the end of the day. Then I did a bunch of research (and found MFP) and realized why that was a terrible idea.0 -

?? fruit and especially vegetables are very carb rich? as are grain based products?0 -
Best: Avoid processed food.
Worst: Weigh in once a week (this just doesn't work for me, may be someone else's best advise but really hurts me).

To the tapeworm people: tapeworms can kill you! They can migrate into your muscle, or brain, and live there for years. Pieces break off. They eat all your nutrition. Literally suck the life right out of you.
They are rare in this country. Why would you even consider living with a deathly parasite, like some poverty-stricken third-world person? We all just eat too much and are not active enough. That's why we're fat. (well, some people really do have thyroid problems--I know I do. I have enlarged thyroid, due to having X-ray therapy to burn out excess tissue after tonsilectomy when I was 6 years old. That's what they did in the '50s! Thought X-rays were the cure-all for everything!) So, I have hypothyroidism, constant fatigue, weight gain and a slew of other symptoms. At least I've only gained 39 lbs in the last 28 years, but I used to be so skinny. At least I don't have thyroid cancer (yet) from that--many who had the x-ray therapy wind up with thyroid cancer. Trying to get back down to about 126, with the help of this site.0 -

Just look them up And it's the only way to get the direct benefits of photosynthesis, the energy from the sun.
Fruits are a different matter. Pick low-glycemic fruits. Eat smaller portions daily. A big fruit salad for breakfast will spike your insulin, just like a candy bar! For quick weight loss, just in the beginning, cut way down on fruit and all processed carbs.
I was (an almost total) vegetarian for 7 years. Never got sick, stayed skinny (then I had a kid--LOL) My, how your life changes!!0 -

Vegetables and whole grains (like millet, amaranth, bulgar wheat, which is what tabouli is made with, brown rice, amaranth, & quinoa) have good carbohydrates. In fact, the grains have lots of them. i think millet has the highest. Deilcious the way i prepare it: sautee chopped onion in a little olive oil, add the grain before that browns too much, let it cook a little, then add water or chicken broth, cover and cook until done--about 20 min. Serve with some fresh steamed spinach, with ground sesame seeds on it, or any other veggie. You'll have lots of carbs--and some protein. I used to put frozen peas & carrots, too. Lots more carbs there.0

Any diet that suggests the elimination of any food or entire food group without consideration of the individual's intolerances or medical conditions is probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard. For example, the assertion that white = bad and brown = good without considering the context of the entire diet.0
