so ive been reading everyone's recipies, meal plans etc and notice a lot of people use greek yogurt....i went to buy some yesterday however when i looked at the sugar content i was amazed! i think it was like15g of sugar in a small container! i am a type 1 diabetic and insulin dependent...but i did notice it has a lot of protein...not sure if this would be a good choice for me or not? or should i just stick to my no fat no sugar brands ive been buying?

I love greek yogurt!!! I'm not really sure how all of that works out with diabetes and such, but it is so good!!!0

Depends on what kind of greek yogurt you are getting. I use Chobani and if you get the kind with flavors (strawberry, peach, honey, etc.) the sugar is all natural but is DEFINITELY there. If you get the plain, fat free variety which I prefer (I add stevia and my own fruit if needed) then it should be sugar free.0

I was really disappointed in how much sugar is in them. I recently decided to cut out all sweeteners, and I'm cutting way back on sugars too. So I figured I had to give up on the idea of greek yogurt, tho I really like it.0

Did you look at Chobani greek yogurt? The Yoplait and other similar yogurts have a lot of sugar in them.0

The plain should be sugar free, then add what you want to it to flavor it. Think of it sort of like sour cream, so you can make some pretty great dips with it. I have made pasta sauces as well.0

Plain variety or only eat a small portion of the fruit.0

chobani??? i didnt see that brand there but i also live in Canada and we dont have the same type of products as the USA....unfortunately but i should look at the plain Greek and see the sugar content....and go with your idea of adding a little chopped fruit, i know the protein factor is great for a diabetic to carry the insulin thanks for your idea's everyone ))))0

Plain Greek Yogurt is not bad - it has less than half the sugar of most of the flavored varieties. I buy the flavored varieties lately for sake of ease, but after reading this and taking a second look, I may go back to regular. I just add some fresh/frozen blueberries or other fruit (no additional sweetener) and sometimes some walnuts or almonds, if I want a hardier meal, and it's quite good.0

Oh I forgot to mention...not only is the fat free plain stuff completely sugar and carb free but it is PACKED with protein and versatile. So when I eat it by itself as a meal I can sweeten it with stevia but I also mix it into tuna packets or chicken breast as a mayo/sour cream swap. It's adding creamy protein and no fat...delish.
6oz should have about 14 grams of protein and basically nothing else excelt for live active cultures.
And I get the Chobani at walmart...so you might have it there.0 -
Hmmm, I have looked at walmart for greek yogurt without any sugar at all.I will have to check again, they do have Chobani I know that. But one store differs from the next so much sometimes and thats just in town.Oh I forgot to mention...not only is the fat free plain stuff completely sugar and carb free but it is PACKED with protein and versatile. DIABETICS PLEASE READ:
Chobani plain fat-free is NOT sugar free. It has 9 grams of sugar per 8oz serving or 7 grams per 6 ounce cup. http://www.chobani.com/cache/Products/4/source/nutition_0percent_pink.jpg <- from the manufacturer's website. I buy the larger containers which gives data for 8 oz servings and it is 9 grams. I'm looking at it now. It is NOT carb free.
Yogurt is milk. Milk has sugars. Telling a diabetic that a food is sugar free when it is most certainly not can be dangerous. EVERYONE needs to read labels, but sometimes we forget and trust what our friends tell us without verifying. Please be careful!0 -

In the plain variety, Fage and Chobani do not have any ADDED sugars. There are sugars present because of the lactose in milk.
The flavored varieties of Greek yogurt do have added sugars.0 -
Whats the difference, I guess I don't understand. I recently learned that even the sugar in fruits affects blood sugar levels.I was really disappointed in how much sugar is in them. President's Choice Plain Fat Free yogurt only has 2g of sugar per serving and is found in canada...probably your best bet
As a diabetic you should start eating Chia seeds as they slow the absorbtion of carbs and sugar into your system and therefore help to regulate your bloodsugar. As a bonus they also keep you feeling super full!0
