I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder about 13 years ago and have been taking some type of antidepressant and clonazepam every day since. I am currently weaning of my clonazepam and hoping to get off the Prozac too. Baby steps...currently on 80mg Prozac and down to .25 clonazepam in am. I was taking .5 clonazepam 3 times daily for general anxiety disorder. I am also the oldest daughter of a true and blue alcoholic...my mom the typical codependant. I read a great book to help me understand what causes this anxiety.....After the Tears...........I recommend it if you come from a dysfunctional/alcoholic family.

Congrats on your activeness on dealing with issues. Weening off is tough, but you seem to understand that you have developped the tools to deal with your stuff. :) YAY!!! (SAVIN $$ TOO now by not buying meds) :flowerforyou:

(((HUGS))) My husband takes that some for anxiety, but his dr told him it was ajust a bandaid and not a daily med. Good luck with getting off of it all. My husband got off paxil several yrs ago and it was really hard for him.

good for you! I've seen patients that have slowly come off the meds (the right way, like you are) and then just gotten their "as needed" prescription... and just knowing they had it for that "just in case" moment was enough to make them feel like "I can make it through (insert whatever situation here)" that they never even actually had to take the "as needed" meds, just kept them in their purse... kinda like a security blanket lol! You'll get there too! yay for you!

I'm going to look into that book. Don't ever forget, though, that if you don't get off of the meds it's not a failure. I was married into a family with a lot of anxiety and depression. It ran throught he family and they didn't even realize what it was. I ended up divorcing, but my kids have some issues they inherited, too. So which came first the alcohol or the anxiety? My X used alcohol to cope until I got him on meds and it was then obvious it was a family trait! The family I grew up with was pretty dysfunctional. So thanks again for mentioning that book! Keep positive, you are strong for continuing on!

I've done some things that were too hard for me to do alone. I've learned that prayer really works and hope you'll try it.

Thanks for the comments. This was my first post ever. I appreciate all the advice. If I need to stay on some dosage of Prozac that is okay with me. I just really wanted to get off the tranquilizers. They made me so tired that I was lethargic and sleepy. Feeling so much better already.

Glad to hear that you're weaning yourself off-- I stopped it cold turkey w/o a doctor's guidance and went through some pretty bad withdrawal...but I didn't know at the time that's what was going on. It was pretty bad, so good for you for doing it the smart the way and already feeling better!!
