Has anyone had experience using a personal trainer? Do they really help? How about the expense?

I have a PT and it's the best investment I ever made. He got me to my lowest every weight and smallest body size in my adult life. Feel free to inbox me for more info
A good PT - highly recommended!0 -
It all depends. I'm training to be a trainer now. I can tell you this:
Some help. Some don't. It all depends on if they listen to you and cater to your needs.
Trainers are expensive. It's their livelihood, so even though you may pay $45 for an hour with them, realize that may be the only money they make all day.
Some things to look for:
Certifications! ACE, AFAA, ISSA, etc. There is no regulation on what you need to be a trainer. Check out ideafit.com to locate a trainer in your area.
See if they do more than train. Do they teach group fitness classes? Do they work at a gym? Do they come to your house?
Look to see how they keep their records. Are they organized?
Ask for discounts or group rates.
See if you can barter with them rather than pay. For most trainers starting off, like me, it's a viable option. If I can train someone for two hours a week in exchange for business cards, free advertising, food, etc. it's worth it.0 -
I just started with a personal trainer 2 weeks agao. He is a god sent! I am already seeing noticable results. I would suggest getting a personal trainer to anyone who struggles with weight loss.0

My good friend is a personal trainer we workout together when he doesnt have clients to train. You are on the right track, get your diet under control first. This will be 80% of of reaching your fitness goal, the toning and strength building through weight training and cardio will come alot easier to you once your diet is where it needs to be, so the perfect combo is MFP and exercise. Good luck on your journey, feel free to add me as a friend I have been on here for 40 days now and have managed to shed 20lbs (shed 20 before joining MFP but this site has made it much more enjoyable.)0

i have used personal trainers , at one gym i belong to the were part of the membership. and i was real useful at first. The only problem started when i used two particular, a couple (which ever was there at the time) and became to chummy and spent more time chit chatting then working out LOL. so i would say pick trainers that you are not 'peers' with .0

I have a personal trainer and while I am very grateful for the guy and very happy that he has made me look better then ever and helped me drop 15 pounds, you need to be compatible. My guy and I are very different personality wise, but he can read me like a book. He knows when I'm upset/somethings not working/I'm in pain, and that makes for more successful sessions I feel. I'm not sure if you belong to a gym, but I know the X-sport chain is running a special with the lowest PT prices of the year and it only goes through next week.0
