So I know this is a kinda a taboo subject being that marijuana is illegal in most states.... but I must admit that some of my extra lbs are the result of regularly smoking, getting the munchies, and munching out BIG time. Obviously this isn't very conducive to weight loss so I've since given up the habit, but I'm wondering if anybody else here has ever encountered the same problem? Just curious.

I'm pretty sure that most people who smoke have that problem. If you're serious about losing weight, and your health, you'll stop smoking. Not only does this give you uncontrollable munchies, smoking weed releases higher amounts of carcinogens than cigarettes.

Munch salted tomato and cucumber slices. Just make sure you slice them before you smoke.

I just asked my cardiologist about this the other day. His opinion was if a person uses marijuana and just sits around being lazy and munching all the time with chips, candy, etc etc. then it's bad. New research that I've heard is that it is safer than cigarettes.

I'm a near daily smoker and I've been consistently losing weight with no problem. If you want to give up smoking I say go for it! Sometimes its nice to just simplify stuff, no smoking = no urge for the munchies which will most def. help you not over-eat. Good luck!

Try to plan it out so that the munchies hit when it's meal time, and have the meal already planned.

Or if you've already used up all your calories, be disciplined and don't eat junk. Maybe have some tea.
  • @noadditives... lol u missed the part where I said I gave up the habit already! But thanks anyways ;)
@heather75 that's exactly what my sister used to tell me! Well, kinda. Basically she always suggested I try to munch on healthy foods so that even if I overindulge its not so terrible. Worked for her, she's always been slim. Not for me tho! An apple would lead to a peanut butter sandwich which would lead to some cereal and then maybe sum chips.... u can see why I had to give it up :(
  • Yeah I've tried the whole eat before I smoke thing or keeping healthy snacks on hand but I suppose I'm just sorely lacking discipline. Well, I've been pot-free for about 2 weeks and I've been dieting/working out for 1 week. 4 lbs lost so far and not wanting to risk taking any steps backward! Maybe after a month of consistent weight loss I'll test my willpower again... till then I shall be "sober the sasquatch" (extra points to anyone who knows who sober the sasquatch is! Lol)

Make some crispy spinach chips LOL
Just bake spinach leaves in the oven with salt, garlic powder, and chili flakes or whatever you crave.
Just google for a recipe if you are interested.
    Crunchy salty goodness.

Sounds like a great plan. Once you've built up a solid fitness and diet routine, that will be your new norm and will be easier to stick to.

Weed increases your metabolism, that's why you get the munchies. If you eat healthy foods and don't just lay around and do nothing while you are high it won't slow down weight loss! I know plenty of people who have lost significant amounts of weight while smoking weed regularly, they just get up and do things while they are high and don't eat a bunch of junk food either.

To be honest I was thin when I smoked (I smoked about 3X per day until I turned 22). I never got over 114 lbs. Once I quit smoking I gained all my weight. I used to laugh and say weed kept you thin and looking young LMBO. I don't smoke anymore, wonder if I need to start back to help with the weight loss:smokin: JK

Eating before smoking doesn't help because weed tricks your brain into thinking that it's always hungry, maybe even after a HUGE meal. This used to be a big problem for me, but I've pretty much found the solution: Stop buying junk food.

If I can get up and grab a bag of chips from the pantry, I'll devour all of them when I'm high. Foods that are easily accessible are the worst! I have stopped buying sodas and chips and everything else that's easy junk food. Keep food that you have to cook, because you probably won't want to cook when you're high.

I've lost 14 lbs so far by eliminating sodas and exercising. If I can just stop drinking that would probably help. I'll never stop smoking though. Not weed anyways.

The entire time I used it regularly I was as thin as the next waif. I feel like it enhances the taste of everything so- you could just eat healthy lower calorie foods if you get struck with the munchies like fresh fruit IMO.
  • @loopytoucan... bad *kitten*, u get a gold sticker lol. Celia gives an anti-drug speech and sober the sasquatch comes out to announce he will put his "big foot DOWN on crime"! Awesomeness
  • @matt7988... I don't buy junk anymore either but I don't live alone so I don't have much control over what others bring into the house. Soda and sweets don't tempt me as much, its the salty stuff that's my downfall... burgers, chips, pizza, etc. It sucks to stop smoking but I don't trust myself just yet to say no to the good stuff. And yea I learned the hard way that eating before smoking so i'd be full doesn't work. I'd just eat again, just like you said. I see some girls have posted that they were thin while smoking so I suppose its my mindset that's the problem. I was chunky before I ever started smoking to begin with so my unhealthy attitudes and tendency to overeat were just exaggerated by the bud. I'm hoping that a major change in my normal eating and excercise habits will change that. Another problem is idepending on what kind of weed u get u can have a real uplifting type of high that makes u wanna get up, move around, and explore. On the other hand I've smoked some stuff that had me feelin all blah and I just wanted to lay around and be lazy.
  • @spcopps... whaaaat??? If ur start smoking again and u actually LOSE weight I will slap you. Ok I won't rlly slap u but seriosly, not fair. Just sayin.

i don't believe in "the munchies" .... it's all in your mind...willpower is willpower
just remember there's a lot less calories in marijuana than alcohol!
  • Hey now, petey... the munchies are a scientifically proven medical phenomenon! Lol. That's why doctors prescribe it to anorexics and chemotherapy patients to stimulate their appetites. But you're right, willpower is willpower and the munchies are no excuse. Its hard though :( can I borrow some of ur willpower??? Lol

I agree. It is legal here in Michigan. Almost everyone I know smokes. Young, old, plumbers, lawyers, doctors, and bankers. And for the most part, nobody is over weight except for a handful of people. Coincidentally, they are also the ones who drink regularly. But seriously, for the most part everybody is normal, active, healthy, and employed. Totally opposite of what the stereotypes say. LOL It's really all in what you choose to do with it. I was perscribed it as an appetite stimulant, but I never exceeded any normal amount of food.

I smoke weed but in moderation. For some reason I don't get the munchies that much. I only take one or two hits though. I'm a light weight and can get stoned very easy. I'm also a wine drinker so I know it's probably not a good idea but I just substitute my wine for food on the days I drink. In my opinion we have to live. Just cut down on your food intake and find a healthy food to snack on when you get the munchies. I've lost 10 pounds so far. My caloric goal is 1350 per day.

I never get the munchies when I blaze. In fact it makes me not want to eat at all. It's really horrible when everyone else wants to grab food but the idea of eatingmakes me feel weird.
Hmmmmmm I wonder what exactly is it that makes people want to much out?

But kudos to you for actually cutting it out! It's not easy for some people. It shows how dedicated you are to your health :) Good luck with everything!

I also was a lot thinner when I smoked on a reg basis but also it was before I had kids and my metabolism was a lot faster....I smoke every once in a blue moon and can't keep my *kitten* outta the kitchen....probably a good thing that it isn't a habit anymore! Plus I can't afford it!!! I use to go on rampant cleaning extravaganzas when I was high and burned most of the munchies off!! Cleaning weed!!!
  • I actually puff a lil before i work out, makes it go a little easier :) plus ur busy working out so you don't think about the munchies! sober the sasquatch would not approve of me, "rarrrrrr.... drugs are baaad! rarrrrr" lol, my fave show EVER!

i think you hit the nail on the head. munchies are the #1 cause of my extra weight and the one last piece of the puzzle that keeps me from accomplishing what i want!!! last week, i smoked, but "somehow" was good, no over munching. this week, im out of control again. the difference? i bought things that i know would tempt me. even buying " a little treat" doesnt work. its either quit the weed or quit the junk buying. ill try to stick with the latter.
