Hi - I just signed up to this site and so far I'm liking what I see. But I have a question - when I initially signed up there were several options for weight loss/gain. The first option was 1 pound a week RECOMMENDED. I'm just wondering if anyone knows why only 1 pound a week was all in caps - - I selected 2 pounds a week but it got me wondering if there are health benefits to only 1 pound a week. Just curious.

I think when you post you want a 2 lb. loss that your calorie intake will be lower. My recommendation would be 1 pound. I would weigh weekly to keep yourself from getting discouraged. You can do this, there are a lot of people on here to encourage you along the way. Myself in included, you can add me if you like!!

It depends on how much you have to lose. If it's a lot, then you can lose 2# a week. If it's not that much, a little less would be healthier.

From everything I've read 2lbs a week is the maximum you should be aiming for to keep yourself healthy and see long term results, I think 1lb is much easier and something more attainable when everyone starts out which is why it is recommended.

I think it all depends on the total amount you need to loose. I was never able to do 2 pounds because it would put me under 1200 calories. I think 1 to 2 pounds a week is perfectly healthy, just don't try to do more than 2. Just my opinion.

It really depends on how much weight you have to lose. If the more you have the more you can lose at the beginning. As you weight goes down your calories will get reduced and you should lower your goals.

I don't know how to copy links but it you go into message boards and click on the individual ones, you can read the frequenly asked questions and you pick up a lot of helpful info there.

    Best wishes and welcome aboard.

I've been losing 2lbs a week for almost 6 weeks now. I think it's pretty easy to do. I also work out almost everyday for an hour and eat about 1300-1450 calories. Its not too much I think it really depends on your preference though.

I've been set at 2 lbs/week for 2 months with no problems (and lost almost exactly 2 lbs/week! yay MFP!). I was feeling pinched after a bad week and bumped it briefly down to 1 lb/week for the weekend but found I didn't need the extra calories and put it back to 2. It depends! Pick a setting and give it a week before you decide whether to change it. Especially if you exercise a lot you may find 2lbs/week totally do-able.

Generally, the 2lb per week goal is for people with 50 pounds or more to lose or a BMI in the "Obese" category.

For people who have less than 50 to lose or are in the "Overweight" or "Healthy" BMI ranges, 1lb per week is recommended.

If you have less than 10-20 pounds to lose and are in a "Healthy" BMI range, then .5lb per week is usually recommended.

    These are guidelines--YMMV.

MFP sets a 'floor' on calorie goals for women at 1200 per day, meaning that no matter what weight loss rate you select, MFP will nto recommend fewer than 1200 calories for females. This is because it is extremely difficult to get complete nutirtion on a calorie goal less than 1200.
