How to measure the calorie count in fruits, veggies & meats?

I'm new to the webstie, but one thing I'm finding extremely difficult is measuring the calorie count in fruits, vegetables and fresh meats. Because of this I find myself eating a lot of "processed" food because I'm unsure of the calorie counts. Any suggestions? I am extremely fond of our local super market's salad bar, but have no idea how to figure out exactly what I am taking in...

1 serving of meat or 3 oz = deck of cards

1 serving of leafy greens = 2 baseballs

1 serving of fruits or veggies = size of your fist

    I hope this helps!

if youre logging things like a salad you can either just log a generic salad, or if you are trying to log everything seperately, try typing in things like 'spinach-raw' so you dont end up getting all the processed things first. adding raw behind vegetables will make sure you get the right ones without having to search forever. Is that what you were asking? Or were you more trying to find out how much of each thing to log?

Salad Bars would be tough- but at home you can use a food scale and I usually trust the "raw" fruit/veg listings without asterics as these were the ones loaded by the site originally.

I say take a cue from Weight Watchers and don't count veggies! They are VERY low in calories (I'm referring to the non-starchy ones, not potatoes, peas, and corn - you do need to count those) plus they have fiber and water to make you feel full. Not to mention the antioxidants.

But if you use the search on here, there is actually a great database of fresh foods. I have had no problem finding veggies, fruits etc..

do you have a food scale? I use this to measure everything. From grams to ounces to pounds.

    be careful at salad bars
all those extras add up, especially when you are not counting or measuring or weighing them. When I go out to eat, I avoid salads as they try to make them too fancy by adding fattening things. I just get steamed veggies--sure I may not know exactly how much I got, but I know one thing......it won't kill the food diary.

I weigh and measure everything. I keep a tiny notebook in my purse and write down what I eat at salad bars and buffets, then log it all.
