Feeling like a bit of a loser right now....

I'm new to MFP. Joined a few weeks ago but today's the first time I've logged in the past few weeks. Weighed myself this morning and realized that in the past few weeks I've actually GAINED four pounds. Yep, you can probably guess that I haven't been counting calories or consistently working out the past few weeks. I'm feeling really down right now because I went from 186 (which I was already really unhappy about) to 190, a number I've been telling myself for ages that I would not let myself get to it.
Oh well. Onward & upward right? Or, I guess I should say onward & DOWNWARD since I'm of course trying to lose weight....

Don't beat yourself up! This is the first day of the rest of your life!!! Start now. Count those calories and get to moving around. It will come off. I promise!0

Have faith! Start consistent logging, eating healthier and exercising and it will work! Don't lose hope and get down on yourself. You CAN do it!0

You can do this. Dream of the person you want to be and let your mind take you there.0

The great thing is that it's never too late to start. Make that commitment to yourself, and to those who love you. You wanna be around for a good long while, and making that life change is what it's all about. Just know that you have a wonderful support system here with plenty of people to cheer you on and help motivate you (minus a few holier-than-thou types).
The biggest thing to remember is that this is a journey... one that will require some serious time and effort. You will have bad days, just as you will have great ones. And when you do have those bad days, you can't hang your head and get discouraged. You have to tell yourself tomorrow will be better and then go out and get it! Patience is key... you can't expect to lose the weight that you gained over years overnight. Think... "Marathon... not sprint."
Good luck to you!!! YOU CAN DO IT!0 -
No Worries! A slip is not a fall! Dust yourself off, and begin your journey anew! Today is a great day to start! Set a goal and get to work, lady!0

Aw, Your not a loser! You know I did the exact same thing!? More than once too, I will get this new diet together that is wonderful, and count cals, and exercise. And than I gain? I have come to realized ...unless it's fat, there is no problem. You could have gained muscle, gain water, and lost fat. And make sure you are being completely honest with yourself in regards to how many cals you eat per day. I started off with just guessing how much cals are in something and I use to guess to low, now I always assume everything is dripping in butter! The more exact you are with your cals the better.
I have a horrible problem with planing out everything I do for like I month, it sounds like a good idea, but if ONE THING goes wrong...boom. Plane has to be thrown out the window and don't apply anymore. So really try and take one day at a time. Take 30mins at a time...take EACH SEC at a time. All of this will add up.
It's time to recover, don't think about what happen in the past anymore. It's gone it's over. And every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward. It wasn't a waste of time, these past few weeks. You learned what DID NOT work for you! That's good! Now you need to find what does work for you. And knowing what doesn't work will help you with that. I always say, A set back is a set up for a come back! Take Care!0 -
One of my favorite quotes is "you don't drown by falling in the water, you drown by staying there." Start today and there's nowhere to go but down. )0

I know that feeling well! I had lost 11 lbs and have gained 3 of them back, despite watching my calories closely.
I recently lost my job (not a surprise--I'm a contractor) and am not exercising like I should be. Motivation is currently low in that department, but I'll get back into it. (Fortunately I'm not an emotional eater, so I can maintain the calories just fine.)
Remember too, when you do watch your intake and you do exercise consistently, you may just gain or stay the same as you trade fat for muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat and the higher your lean muscle mass ratio the better. Taking body measurements can help you see progress even when the scale doesn't show it.
We all go up and down occasionally for various reasons, so please don't feel you're alone! You'll get there, and this group is very supportive.0 -
There is no such thing as a loser, unless you are talking about losing weight, which is the only kind of loser to recognize. It very well may be that you are experiencing what I call a BOUNCE, which is when you get a low weight one time when you weigh, and then for no apparent sane reason, your weight goes up or down or sideways for several days and then settles in again at or below the original weight. I'm not sure why, but it can be very disheartening, and you can doubt yourself. I now weigh almost every day, then take my blood pressure and blood sugar and log it all. I'm old, if you want to know the truth - turning 60 this summer. Logging helps me see the patterns and using MFP helps me see how my exercise and diet interact with the "numbers." Anyway, don't beat yourself up, I've bounced 4 pounds or so, and I'm slowly having success, even maintaining weight is a success, so know that you can do it, and build in little carbs to make yourself feel that you aren't depriving yourself of all treats.0

Sounds like you know why that happend. The good news is that also means you know what to do to reverse the trend. None of us got how we are overnight and it's going to take time to learn some new habbits but with practice, it does get easier. Don't beat yourself up for your mistakes. Just make sure you learn from them!0

A lot of the time, if you look at what youre eating (or drinking) you can chalk it up to increased sodium intake or water weight. I tend to see this after a weekend out drinking... almost every time. And then the following week I will see a "larger" drop in weight, but it's sort of artificial because it's just losing what was already lost before plus the new loss.
Aside from that, from what I have seen, sodium is the key nemesis for most of us on here. And when we can't control that, we're going to retain water. So the big thing is to drink a ton of water to flush that outta the system. I mean, literally like a gallon or more of water a day.0 -
Don't be so hard on yourself. We all have days when we feel this way. If you make your main goal be to 'never quit', the occasional stumbling block won't get you so down on things. By this being a lifelong journey and not just a diet or a temporary weight loss program, but a lifestyle change, it put things into perspective for me in a big way. I have also learned to give myself one day off where I don't log, count, and sometimes I don't work out either on my off day unless I just really want to, but it keeps me feeling 'normal' and the next day I'm right back on track again. Don't think that you have to do everything perfectly because none of us are so just take it one day at a time and look at this journey as starting over every day. It will help you to stay focused and dedicated, because we literally ARE starting over with each new day. Just think about the situation a little differently and your actions will follow. Cheer up, we're all losers on here and you can and will succeed. I believe you can, now you believe it too! Much success to you!:flowerforyou:0
