Now I have never been a runner. My boss and I are on a fitness journey together. She is a lot smaller than I am but not in the best of shape. She heard on the radio there is a 10k run to support the Y!
I want to do this but I am afraid of over doing it. I may be able to jog a fair bit but I am a speed walker by nature. I can speed walk about 6km/h - but I dont want to be the last in the pack!!! Im afraid maybe this is too soon??

What are some steps I can take to prepare better for it? I am going to start jogging this week - seeing how well I can do.

The event is June 5th - so just a little over a month to prepare. Am I nuts for even considering this????

If you're not a runner, a month is a pretty short period of time to train for a 10K if you're goal is to run the entire thing. There will be plenty of people there who don't run it all.

I was terrified for my first 5K, but you know what? It was awesome! I didn't run the entire thing and was one of the last finishers, but I did it!

And even if you are last, you still beat every single person who didn't try.

I say you should give it a shot, but don't beat yourself up for walking when you need to.

    Good luck!
  • I use an iphone app called Couch to 10k I think you can find the program online if you search for it. It has you start out running 2 minutes and walking 3 for an hour... then every week it ups the running by 30 seconds (and lowers the walking). If you start... oh... NOW... you could do it! I am on week 4 and am training for a 10k in July!! Good Luck!

I think a goal is very helpful in motivating yourself to exercise. I too am not a runner...but I did a 5k and have another one on May 14th. The first one I was not able to jog the whole way...but I finished it and it was a better time than I expected. I am training for the May 14th 5k and just today ran the longest and farthest non-stop....a whopping 24 mins and 1.69 miles. I think that you should do it! Perhaps a 5k would have been a better place to start...but you guys will motivate each other to finish. Plus, I am sure that you will not be the last one to finish. You can do it! Check out this website for motivation and tips on training that were very helpful to me. http://running.about.com/

I did a 10k last year at very short notice (8 days) with no real training (I had done one slow 6k run per week for a couple of months previously), and to be honest, it was awful. I came in at 1 hr 4 mins, which was near the back (400 people racing, I came in at 330th) and I honestly thought I might die several times during the race and for a good hour after.

I did it, but 10k is really quite a long way! I am doing another in June after a fair bit of training, and hoping for about 55 mins, if I run my best on the day. That's still slow, and I've been training for a year lightly, and 8 months seriously!

On the other hand, if it's for charity, it's worth it, even if you have to walk.

I would walk the whole thing to be honest. I could EASILY walk 10k. I LOVE LOVE LOVE long walks - always have.
I think I am going to try and "train" for it starting tomorrow. Its for charity and I dont care about 'winning' . I care about winning in life - winning my weightloss battle. The Y is helping me with that - and 10k would help me too lol
